GLYNN JOHNSON ARRESTED AND CHARGED!
At about 4:00 PM today, December 16, 2008, Los Angeles Assistant Fire Chief Glynn Johnson was arrested and charged with felony animal cruelty for the beating of the Toole family's 6-month-old puppy, Karley. She sustained a broken nose and jaw, a gouged-out eye, and a crushed skull. Johnson tossed her - still breathing - into a nearby gully to die. She had to be euthanized hours later due to her intense suffering and loss of future quality of life.
Our heartfelt gratitude is extended to all of you for your compassion and perseverance. The demonstrations, e-mails, telephone calls, letters, and faxes forced the authorities to levy charges against this egregious puppy killer. You stood up and spoke out for this innocent and defenseless little dog - and her assailant is sitting behind bars as a result.
YOU SENT SOME VERY CLEAR MESSAGES!
We know the victories come few and far between and this was only one case among so many. But you sent some very clear messages these past six weeks. A high-ranking public official learned that he could not hide behind his position. The District Attorney and his Assistant understood that this grievous crime could not be swept under the rug. You provided a grief-stricken family with the support they needed to get through a horrific ordeal. And you have brought the promise of justice to another sentient being who lived a tragically short life and died an unimaginably brutal death.
OUR WORK IS NOT DONE...
1 - We need to keep calling Riverside County District Attorney, Rod Pacheco and his Assistant, Chuck Hughes to thank them for arresting and charging Johnson and to demand that he be punished to the maximum extent granted by law.
2 - We need to contact Los Angeles Fire Chief, P. Michael Freeman to demand that Johnson be fired and rendered unable to collect his retirement pension of $180,000 a year. This is extremely time-sensitive, as we believe he is due to retire in January 2009.
3 - We need to make sure that the judge on the bench does not hand down a lenient sentence - the typical "slap on the wrist" that we observe all too often in animal cruelty cases. We will keep you updated on court appearances, trial date, and any indicated contact requests or demonstrations.
We accomplished an arrest and charges - now, let's go for a conviction and stiff penalties!
