Happy Wednesday / Thursday.

We will be doing a couple of quick loads on Thursday morning from 0830.  This weekend anything could happen… let us know if you intend to come out, what time you will arrive and what you would like to do.  Normal Operations – subject to enough confirmed interest.  We will have one AFF Instructor, but may be able to get 2 AFF Instructors for Sunday morning – again, subject to enough confirmed interest.   Tandem Introductory Skydiving possible all weekend – bookings essential.

Last week (on the way back from The Margate Boogie) a couple of us were invited to jump the Police Porters with the SAPS Special Task Force alongside their Specialized Parachuting Training.  We did a few exciting things including:  Kit Jumps, Operational Training Night Jumps, 16Way Canopy Formation Cross Country Flights, GPS Navigation under Parachute, as well as some FS and FreeFlying.  Thanks Bertus and SAPS Special Task Force for the invite and accommodating us.  Most Drop Zones in the area experienced the same kak cold windy weather last weekend.  We didn’t do much in the way of skydiving at all!

Graham did his 500th Angel Jump the other day, doing a tandem out of WWO at Wonderboom with Lew Pilot flying and Angie on cam.

== Chief Instructor Graham Field’s Comment ==

Some longish advice on outlandings this week as most jumpers will experience off DZ landings at some time.

Firstly don’t panic if you see you are not going to get back to the immediate DZ area, or at least onto the airfield.

Make clear and early decisions regarding the available options and stick to your plan. From your first jump you are trained to deal with outlandings so go back to basics.

Find an open area clear of visible obstacles. Long and narrow areas are generally better than a short round type area.

Watch for overhead lines and fences near roads. Colour changes in a straight  line to grasslands and fields often means a fence line and darker / denser areas of vegetation / grass often have concealed rocks. On sloping ground try land along the contour, downhill if you must and only uphill if no other option. Look all around you including behind for the best option and don’t be afraid to fly away from the DZ to get to the best place - lifts are easy to get.

Land and flare normally and don’t make any sharp or low turns close to the ground. If you are suddenly faced with an obstacle make as small as possible corrections to avoid it at least with your body. Fly your parachute all the way into a hazard and make it go where you want - be the pilot not a passenger. If you must hit something then hit it as slow as possible – flare, land into wind if possible - and try choose the softest option ;)

Carry a cell phone, identify good out landings around your regular DZ, learn to spot and check your position during freefall, learn a bit about upper winds and freefall drift, make sure you can land your newly downsized main and reserve safely anywhere not just back on the nice DZ lawn, for obvious reasons chat to the local CReW Dogs, wing suiters and demo jumpers.  Practice flat turns, learn to PLF properly, try land together if a group outlands, get your PRO rating, attend a canopy control course etc..

The advice list is endless but always have a plan, and a back up plan… and stick to them.
