Almost Spring….
== Quote of The Week ==
“I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to tread outside my comfort zone and to experience true flying”
Miss Limpopo Kholofelo Madiba <representing Mall of The North> during her AFF Course at The Ranch SkyDiving Boogie and Symposium.
== Ranch SkyDiving Boogie and Symposium ==
The A-Team from across the country pulled in, and the plan came together. An incredible boogie, smooth relaxed and efficient operations, lots of skydivers and lots of loads at a luxurious venue.
From the operations base at the Protea Hotel Ranch Resort main hotel swimming pool lapa the event received registrations from 88 experienced skydivers representing 21 different Sports SkyDiving Operations and Military Units from across Southern Africa. Over the 5 days of the event 90 loads went to 12 000ft, and 767 bodies were dropped from 2 Turbine Atlas Angels operating in synchronised harmony. Incredible interest, support and participation was received from Limpopo and Polokwane, with 78 people coming for a Tandem Introductory SkyDive with one of the 9 experienced Tandem Masters and numerous experienced Camera Flyers in attendance. 3 people came back for a second tandem skydive!
The SANDF saw The Ranch SkyDiving Boogie and Symposium as an ideal opportunity to enhance cooperation and learning opportunities, promoting military interest in sport skydiving and the inter-operateability with the Parachute Association of South Africa (PASA) whilst learning and sharing ideas by participating at events and with skydiving clubs outside of the military. Official representation was received from various military units including 44 Parachute Regiment, 5 Special Forces Regiment, Pretoria Military Parachute Club, 101 Air Supply Unit, Air Force Base Bloemspriut and the SANDF Physical Training Sport and Recreation Training Centre, and a Classic Accuracy event was held and judged by Chief Military Judge Annelie Hoeksema.
We had Capricorn FM and Jacaranda FM DJs as well Limpopo Tourism and Parks “Limpopo Women in Adventure”, and an ever coming flow of people coming to “Discover SkyDiving and Parachuting at The Ranch Resort”. The playground in the sky was alive.
Miss Limpopo Kolofello Madiba <Representing Mall of The North> trained to skydive with us at the event through the AFF Program in celebration of Women’s Day.
Extensive coverage for the event, the venue, and sports skydiving was achieved on SABC News, SABC Sport, Weekend Live and Morning Live. Capricorn FM and Jacaranda FM DJs couldn’t stop talking about their experience live on air throughout the event. African Pilot Magazine, The Polokwane Observer and MyPolokwane.com all ran with various stories pertaining to the event in the run-up to, during and after the event.
Much coaching, skills development and progression took place with Louis Eybers getting his FreeFly Coach Rating and Tandem Rating, Garai Makaya his CAT III and B license, Andre Nel his PRO Rating and C-License, Hendri Liebenburg was signed off for his packing license, JJ Conradie made his 100th skydive (yes naked) and Frederik his 1000th Skydive. Selwyn did a whole bunch of FS Coaching and organized 4way and 8way jumps.
Karen Fourie took the www.Blu-Eye.com prize with the most skydives (24) of the boogie and several people took up www.ActionCameras.co.za incredible event special event price on the Drift HD 170 cameras. Pretty much everyone went for a lion interaction and the Kolobe Tented Camp was alive with festivities around the fires every night.
Thanks to everyone that had any part in planning, organizing, supporting, sponsoring, running, participating, covering or just enjoying what would not have happened without all of the above.
Yes, this will be an annual event on the South African SkyDiving Calendar!
== SKYDIVE FOR RHINOS 2011 ==
On 6th August 40 African Conservation Trust members and supporters made tandem skydives with the crew from Skydive Durban at Angels’ Way to raise awareness and funding for anti-poaching activities that are urgently needed to protect South Africa’s remaining black and white rhino populations.
SKYDIVE FOR RHINOS 2011 was a great success. Well done to all involved and, all for a good cause.

== New World Record for Canopy Piloting Distance ==
It looks like a new world record has been set by Nicolas Batsch... 222.45 meters! Beating the previous record (also his) by 40.75 meters… WOW, that’s like a quarter of a kilometer of serious canopy piloting.

== 2 Albatrosses, Pilots and Passengers, South African Aviation Legends, Loved Ones and Dear Friends to Many involved in a Tragic Accident ==
On Sunday 14 August after the “Race of Champions” and the Tzaneen Airshow two Albatrosses took off in formation for what was to be their last flight.
Search and rescue with incredible support was launched and maintained in challenging conditions until Tuesday morning. All on board were very precious to very many. Heartfelt condolences to everyone affected by this sad loss.
== Chief Instructor Graham Field’s Comment ==
Welcome back from The Ranch Boogie 2011 - to all who attended thanks for keeping it safe and fun.
Two incidents at the Boogie were related to equipment being incorrectly setup / assembled and were completely avoidable. Please when receiving or jumping new gear do a thorough check of everything you can before packing it and / or get your rigger to have a look 1st.
If you are relatively inexperienced, I also suggest that you find a willing (if there is one ;) senior jumper to do the 1st jump on new gear. Open higher for full canopy checks and so you have time to deal with any issues you may experience.
On a personal note I would like to extend my sincere condolences and support to all who lost loved ones and especially for my Team Mates Dennis & Glen in the The Goodyear Eagles Aerobatic Team who suffered the loss of their Family members in the tragic crash of the 2 Albatross Aircraft on the way back from The Tzaneen Airshow this past weekend.
To my mates Brian, Kevin and Frans fly free and blue skies :(
