The Anesthesiologist Assistant profession has advanced considerably as a medical assistant specialty over the last few years. The Anesthesiologist Assistant now participates actively in outpatient and inpatient care, operating rooms, recovery rooms, outpatient clinics, intensive care units and outpatient surgery centers. Anesthesiologist Assistants will continue to thrive as partners in the care of surgical and medical patients. The Anesthesiologist Assistants are valued and respected as physician assistant specialists by Anesthesiologists and surgical colleagues. Anesthesiologist Assistants are compassionate, committed, dedicated and enthusiastic members of the Anesthesia care team. AA's will be licensed in every state throughout the country over the next few years. Currently AA's practice in 16 states, Florida being the newest state to pass legislation on March 31, 2005. How do you become an AA? First, you will need to obtain a baccalaureate degree preferably in a science related field (but this is not mandatory). What is mandatory for being considered for the AA program is completing the medical prerequisites (English, General Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, General physics, Calculus) with above average grades. Once accepted into the Anesthesiologist Assistant program, you train for approx. 27 months, earn a Masters degree in science and eventually take the Certifying Examination for Anesthesiologist Assistants.
