Hi, I am just starting to work on Linux for P550. Went through various
sites including yours and got some initial ideas. But some doubts are
there, would be grateful if you can spare a few minutes to answer

- I am planning to use the toolchain from codesourcery. The Arm.com
website says I can use the 2.6.24 kernel with patches provided by
them. Elsewhere I read that kernel.org sources can be used directly
without change, since relevant changes are merged back. Then there is
also sources (familiar) from handhelds.org which include changes to
kernel.org sources. Then there is Android kernel sources. Of the lot,
which is better to start off with?

- what machine type should I use to compile? I see a directory in the
source tree for SC2440 which powers the P550 but I dont see directory
for P550 itself. However, the machine_types latest file has an entry
called mio_P550, does that mean I can use that machine type?

Hi,

For the first question, I would recommend you to start with the familiar sources because it already included drivers for a lot of common hardware components, which you can directly use with minor modification or as good references.

For the second question, I think you can use the latest mach-types, or just copy the line for the P550 into the old file.

Regards,
Reed

Run "make menuconfig" under the root of your source tree.

Can you tell me which command I should run for the initial
configuration of the kernel (disable/enable hardware etc) and to
compile it? The docs I have seen so far says run 'make' but wonder how
that would specify the target machine etc... I have not compiled Linux
kernel before but have done that with FreeBSD some years back
