I can't seem to get this to work, here's a step-by-step of what I've
tried, someone please tell me what bone-headed, simple step I'm
overlooking...

On a Windows Vista PC, I downloaded the .zip Radio and Recovery files.
I moved the Radio, without unzipping, to the SD card (root directory),
and renamed update (and update.zip)
I put the card in the phone and did the Home+Power start up
Got the triangle, alt+l, alt+s

Phone searched for the update.zip, couldn't find it; "e:/sdcard/
update.zip"

I then created a "sdcard" folder and put "update.zip" file in it.

Again, after alt+s, unable to find "e:/sdcard/update.zip"

This is an HTC phone that I purchased from the factory after signing
up through the Android developer page. No modifications or replacement
images, operating systems etc.

I have even gone back, unzipped the radio file, then renamed the
radio.img to "update.zip" and tried to install it from the root of
sdcard.

I've tried two different sdcards.

I've tried it with the door open and closed over the sd slot.

I'm pretty much out of ideas here...

I can tell how it worked for me,

I followed all the instructions at the link

http://www.htc.com/www/support/android/adp.html

1. download the Android SDK 1.5
2. install the usb driver for phone which is with the SDK
3. go to tools folder run the command $ adb
push ......................................

all rest of the details are in the above link...

I am sure it will work for you too...

It doesn't look like you're overlooking anything.

My only recommendation, maybe, would be to rename the file to
"update.zip" before copying it to the SD card... (8+3 filenames vs
long filenames).

If that doesn't work, you may want to try reformatting your SD card -
I have a vague memory of some cards coming out of the factory
formatted in a way that recovery didn't recognize, but I didn't think
that this made it into production for the ADP1.

Renaming the radio to update.zip on the PC before copying to the
microsd worked- although it named it "update.zip.zip" and I had to
drop an extra .zip.

Now to see if the Recovery image is going to work as well.

Thanks!

What does the microchip with a curved arrow going into it mean?

I rebooted as instructed and got that for a couple of seconds, then
the regular boot up started. Is that a "writing to ROM" icon or
something?

Had me a touch panicked for a moment...

Reboot went well, was able to again rename on PC to "update" and then
copy to card. Recognized and installed, and rebooted successfully-
although the final boot after recovery image took a LONG time.

Firmware version shows as 1.5

Thank goodness this board exists or I'd be 1.0 forever...

Yes, I think it means "writing to flash".

(yes, the very first boot takes a long time, as ADP1 images aren't
pre-optimized and need to be optimized during the first boot).

What does LONG mean exactly? Currently I'm after an hour of waiting
for boot after the second update described on HTC site and I don't
know if I have to wait longer.

3 to 5 minutes. You should be able to track it with "adb logcat". 1
hour is definitely not normal.

I meet the same problem when I upgrade to 1.5 adp. My sd card is 8GB,
I tries a lot of times failed. At last, I unplug the 8GB sd card and
plug a 128 MB sd card, repeat the upgrading steps, It worked. You can
try the same.
