The 50th San Francisco International Film Festival is presenting a
jubilant documentary that celebrates the enduring legacy of
underground culture hero Harry Smith, called The Old, Weird America:
Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music. The film will be shown
Saturday April 28 at the Sundance Cinemas Kabuki (in addition to a few
other times), and the director, Rani Singh, is expected to be in
attendance. The documentary hones in on Smith`s incalculably
influential Anthology of American Folk Music, a remarkable and
enduring collection of blues and country classics. Singh has
assembled concert footage, interviews and archival images into a
fittingly celebratory rocking documentary. Transcendent performances
by Beth Orton, DJ Spooky, Sonic Youth, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Lou
Reed, Philip Glass, Richard Thompson, Emmylou Harris, Beck and Nick
Cave highlight the proceedings. The Old, Weird America is a testament
to Smith`s impeccable taste in music. For tickets and more
