A Keeper of Our Story

In Memory of Dr. Bill Marchione (1942–2026)

There are some who build with brick and stone,
Whose monuments rise toward the sky;
But some build with the gift of memory,
So history will never die.

Bill Marchione was such a man,
A teacher first, in heart and mind;
Who spent his life with open hands,
Leaving treasured gifts behind.

A Brighton boy from childhood days,
He walked our streets with eager eyes;
He learned their names, their hopes, their dreams,
Their quiet truths, their victories.

From Brighton High he found his path,
To Boston University’s halls;
Then George Washington, then Boston College,
Answering history’s faithful calls.

For thirty-five years he taught young minds,
That history lives in every place;
Not merely dates upon a page,
But ordinary lives we trace.

He showed us cattle, fields, and farms,
Where Brighton’s earliest story grew;
Where gardens flourished, stockyards thrived,
And Washington’s brave soldiers drew
Their needed food from this small town—
A chapter many never knew.

His books became our neighborhood’s voice,
With The Bull in the Garden leading the way;
Each page preserving yesterday
So tomorrow would remember today.

When others saw old buildings fade,
Bill saw treasures worth defending.
He rallied neighbors, raised his voice,
His work of preservation never ending.

The old Oak Square School still stands,
Because he cared enough to fight;
Its timbers whisper thanks today,
Still standing proud in morning light.

He gathered maps and faded letters,
Photographs with curling seams;
Listening gently to old neighbors
Tell forgotten hopes and dreams.

He taught us facts with careful hands,
Making certain truth endured;
For history is more than stories told—
It is memory made secure.

In nineteen seventy, with hope renewed,
He breathed fresh life where hope seemed small;
The Brighton Historical Society
Found its strongest friend of all.

Then, when two hundred years arrived,
He led our Bicentennial year;
A celebration rich with pride
That drew our whole community near.

And when our museum sought a home,
His friendship opened one at last;
A place where Brighton’s living story
Could protect and share its past.

At Twenty Chestnut Hill Avenue
Our Heritage Museum found its place;
A lasting gift to generations,
Built through Bill’s enduring grace.

Twenty years ago he journeyed south,
With Mary Ann beside his way,
To Smyrna, Georgia, near their family,
Yet Brighton never left his heart a day.

Though miles apart, his spirit stayed
Along these streets he loved so well;
For every corner held a memory,
And every memory had a tale to tell.

Today we mourn a faithful friend,
A scholar, teacher, neighbor true;
Yet every child who learns our story
Carries part of Bill anew.

The papers saved… the books he wrote…
The buildings standing proud and tall…
The countless lives he gently touched—
These are his monuments to us all.

Some people pass and leave behind
A name carved cold in marble stone.

Bill Marchione leaves something greater:

A community that knows its story.

And because it knows its story,

It knows itself.

May future generations walk these streets,
Read the books that bear his name,
And understand that one devoted life
Can keep a whole town’s heart aflame.

Rest now, dear Bill.

The lessons have been taught.

The stories have been saved.

And Brighton-Allston will remember.

What a lovely tribute to Bill, Nancy!    I didn't know Bill personally but I felt that I knew him by reading all his books during guide shifts.  I miss having the museum and hope (probably irrationally) that it can reappear when the senior center reopens in our old location.  Thanks again for sending this.
