For immigrants to the U.S., the dream is primarily for a better life. Learning English is the key. To be able to speak English enables our immigrants to get better work, to speak with their children's teachers, to make new friends and be a part of our community.
At the YMCA Gardner Pilot Academy Adult Education Program, we provide free, high-quality English classes for immigrants, taught by professional, certified instructors. Our 7-level curriculum includes focus on real-life situations such as communicating at the workplace, at the doctor's office, and at the grocery store. We emphasize the use of technology in our instruction so our students feel more capable and empowered to use it in their daily lives. We also run a class for higher-level students entitled English for Immigrant Entrepreneurs. This year, we have expanded our offerings to include a class for native Spanish speakers who struggle with illiteracy in their own language.
We offer a holistic program as we provide wrap-around services including free childcare, free meals, free clothing, and connections to community resources such as healthcare and employment resources. We collaborate with multiple local organizations to run workshops for our students on topics such as immigrant rights and financial literacy.
