Green Line Transformation Program Update, September 23

The last of four accelerations for the 2022 Track Upgrades and Green Line Train Protection System (GLTPS) work begins this Saturday. Shuttles will replace Green Line service between Riverside and Kenmore Stations for three nine-day periods, allowing crews to conduct 24/7 work and efficiently complete critical infrastructure updates. Did you know…
… That truck pads at stations are used to get high-rail vehicles on and off the right-of-way to conduct work? The decision of which truck pad to use is based on proximity to the work, but also which truck pads can provide access without making vehicles pass through active construction areas on the right-of-way.

D Branch Acceleration, Three Nine-day Closures

Work will begin on September 24 and is scheduled to end on October 30. During these three nine-day closures, we will install GLTPS Train Protection kits along the branch, replace more than 6,000 feet of track, and upgrade 6 station crossings at Waban, Eliot, and Woodland Stations.

Free, accessible shuttles will replace Green Line service between Riverside and Kenmore Stations for three nine-day periods:

  • Saturday, September 24 – Sunday, October 2
  • Saturday, October 8 – Sunday, October 16
  • Saturday, October 22 – Sunday, October 30

Regular service will resume between the nine-day periods. Brookline Village shuttles will stop on Pearl Street: outbound shuttles will utilize the bus stop that serves the Route 60 buses, while inbound shuttles will stop on Pearl Street a short distance to the north on the straightaway. Shuttles are not able to stop at Beaconsfield due to narrow roads in the area. Riders can use Reservoir Station, or Dean Road on the C Branch, as alternatives. Please note that the parking lots at Waban and Eliot Stations will be closed for the duration of the closures.

Express Buses will run via Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) from Riverside to Kenmore during Red Sox games or events at Fenway Park. For the latest information on service changes, please visit the D Branch Alerts page.

D Branch Station Accessibility Improvements

The GLT team continues to progress the D Branch Station Accessibility Improvements project, which will help make the D Branch fully accessible. On Wednesday, September 21, the project team met with the Brookline Transportation Board to provide an update on and coordinate around the accessibility upgrades and the connection to Waldstein Park from Beaconsfield Station. We truly appreciate the engagement and support of all our partners as we advance the project to 100% design and move towards our transformational goals for improved accessibility and a better experience for all riders.

Adjacent Green Line Projects

We also want you to be aware of adjacent projects on the Green Line. While the GLT team does not directly oversee these projects, we coordinate closely with them.

  • Maintenance of Way Track Work
The MBTA’s Maintenance of Way (MOW) Department will utilize the access provided by the D Branch closure to conduct track work between Newton Center and Newton Highlands.

Please note the schedule for these major infrastructure projects is dependent on weather and COVID-19 guidelines and subject to change without notice.
