Subject: Allston Post Office

Hello Everyone,

The people who live and work in Allston have been without a U.S. Post Office for 3 ½ years.

The social and economic injustice of denying people access to goods and services and opportunities everyone should have is breathtaking.

Although I am appreciative of the efforts of Eaton Properties to negotiate with the United States Postal Service to reestablish a full -scale retail operation at their planned development at 25-39 Harvard Ave (Previous Allston Post Office Location), I write you today with a number of concerns:

On the Eaton Properties' proposal:
  • We are still losing a main post office facility which included delivery operations
  • There is real concern about pickup and delivery operations on Harvard Ave
  • Despite Eaton Properties' plan to seek formal approval of the project in the August-September timeframe, they have yet to receive even a Letter of Intent from the United States Postal Service
  • Given current market conditions, even if the project is ever constructed, we are looking at a minimum of two more years of doing without
  • Are we focusing exclusively on the Eaton Properties' proposal at the expense of looking at an abundant number of available commercial properties which would provide a timelier solution that could possibly include the public safety considerations
With all due respect, this issue has not received the urgency it deserves.  I am asking elected officials and government officials to escalate a commitment to the people of Allston to resolve this issue in a timely fashion.

Just writing a letter without consistent follow-up is not going to get the job done.

Tony

Thank you for this, Tony. I couldn't agree more. It's absolutely ridiculous that we've been without a post office for so long, and the proposed solution is just not good enough, and definitely not timely enough. I really appreciate you raising the issue again.
