Green Line Transformation Program Update

First Closure Complete, 2nd of 3 Surges Begins Saturday, October 8

I am happy to share that the first of three 9-day closures of the D Branch was completed successfully. Regular service will operate until this Friday, October 7. The second closure will begin on Saturday, October 8, and will continue through Sunday, October 16. Shuttle buses will replace train service at the start of service on Saturday. Following the completion of that closure, regular service will resume for five days until the third and final full-access closure begins on Saturday, October 22 to Sunday, October 30.

The MBTA’s Capital Transformation team replaced approximately 2,000 feet of track on the D Branch and installed Green Line Train Protection System (GLTPS) equipment along the tracks. Track was fully reconstructed at Woodland Station and two pedestrian track crossings were replaced, one at each end of the station’s platform.

Amplifying Results

To amplify the results of this 9-day full access closure, our team coordinated with other departments and partners to begin improvements that will benefit all riders and the community:

  • The MBTA Security Department installed security cameras at the Fenway Portal
  • MBTA Signals Department upgraded signals between Reservoir and Fenway Stations
  • Maintenance of Way (MOW) teams repaired track between Chestnut Hill and Newton Highlands Stations
  • MBTA Transit Facilities Maintenance (TFM) painted power poles, benches and completed additional station improvements
  • MBTA Power conducted lighting improvements at several D Branch stations

Please note that the parking lots at Waban and Eliot Stations will be closed for the duration of the closures. There will be no access to Waban, and Eliot Stations during construction, and pedestrians should use nearby streets as an alternative to the stations’ track crossings to get to the other side of the tracks. For the latest information on service changes, please visit the D Branch Alerts page.

Please note the schedule for these major infrastructure projects is dependent on weather and COVID-19 guidelines and subject to change without notice.
