As Salaamu Alaikoum,
We get the following question most every other
day here at sunnahfollowers - is it haram for women to wear makeup outside
the house? Again we tell you to be careful using the word Haram because
only Allah has the authority to make things haram. Make up is not haram
especially if worn as it is supposed to be worn - to hide what should not be
seen - not enhance. Kohl is a make-up and the prophet's wives and
daughters wore it outside the house and here is the evidence. So again be
careful using the word "haram" without evidence.
Finally, Allah says in the
Quran:
|
|
"And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from
looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal
sexual acts) and not to show off their adornment except only that which is
apparent .." - Quran
24:31
Many scholars of Tafseer say that "except only that which
is apparent" excuses the eyes and hands from the rules of adornment.
So again, when you come to the website and learn something
new, please dont waste our time debating. If you dont agree with something
or if something is too much for you - take to to the prayer rug and debate it
with Allah - not us here. And never use the word "haram" on this website
unless you can back it with clear evidence.
Can women wear Kohl or make-up outside the
house?
Praise be to Allah,
First of all let me remind you
that the haram has been clearly defined to us by Allah and his Messenger. To say
a thing is haram you must be able to provide the
CLEAR EVIDENCE
proving it. For example, to say it is haram to eat pork, one will have to go get
the CLEAR EVIDENCE wherein Allah or the Messenger said it is haram. The same
applies to khol and other things.
For one to say that is is HARAM for a woman
to wear khol, they must bring forth the Clear Hadith. The Clear Hadith is one
that Clearly states: No Muslim woman can wear Khol. When you ask a person to
bring forth the hadith proving Khol to be haram for women, they can not, and the
reason they can not is because no such hadith exists.
The Lawful is
clear and the Unlawful is clear:
"The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear..."
[Bukhari and Muslim]
In between those things
that are lawful and unlawful, are some things that are doubtful and the doubtful
things are those things in which Allah and his messenger did not address. Khol
is not one of those things because the prophet(sa) addressed it in many
hadiths:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
Wear your white garments, for they are
among your best garments, and shroud your dead in them. Among the best types of
collyrium you use is antimony (Khol) it clears the vision and makes the hair
sprout. [Dauod]
The Prophet (peace be upon
him) said,
"Apply antimony, for it clears
the sight and makes the hair grow." And he asserted that the Prophet had a
collyrium-case from which he applied collyrium every night in three times each
eye. [Tirmidhi transmitted it]
When the Prophet(sa) had revealed to the people that when making
hajj, if one has not brought the sacrificial animals with them, they should put
off ihram and treat the hajj as an umrah, Ali came from the Yemen with the
sacrificial animals for the Prophet (peace be upon him) and found Fatimah (Allah
be pleased with her) to be one among those who had put off Ihram and had put on
dyed clothes and had applied antimony. He (Ali) showeddisapproval to it,
whereupon she said: My father has commanded me to do this. [Muslim]
Hajj as you know is a public event
meaning we perform it outside the house in the presence of others. Fatima put on
Khol to continue her Umrah. If it were haram for a woman to wear Khol she would
not have worn it.
Conclusion:
Khol is an antimony which when applied to the eyes does not wash off easily for
it goes inside the eye. This being so it may stay on for days. If it were haram
for a woman to wear Khol, the Prophet(sa) would have stated, Khol to be lawful
for only the Males of this nation, just as he said, Silk and Gold are only
lawful for the Females of this nation. Allah tells us that our religion is
complete, meaning he left nothing out, he made no mistakes. Be careful using
this word "Haram". The reality is that most things are Lawful and the Haram is
few. Anyone who says a thing is haram must be able to bring forth the clear
Proof. If he or she can not do so, then they are guilty of making the lawful
haram which is Shirk Al Akbar, and this is a sin in which Allah will never
forgive. We must learn that Islam is not based on our likes or dislikes, and
being so, we must stop imposing our opinions into this deen.
The Prophet(sa) said anyone who imposes a
condition into this religion that was not imposed by Allah will have it
rejected.
