Having meditated on your question for many hours the answer that arises:

Doing knows

Doing gives rise to a sense there is me

If nothing is happening there is no basis for the illusion of me

It was in answer to a specific question though as you say it is "self" perpetuating ;)

....consciousness being consciousness as that very thought and writing at the time - and now the memory and these words written and read and thought right now. Conscious of and as whatever is. What can it not be?
