USYD bought some 3mm PLA for the Makerbots. My first attempt to use
it ran into a problem where the PLA was getting stuck in the metal
neck of the Mk6 hot end. The problem was solved by running a fan that
blows onto the neck of the hot end to try and stop the heat
propagating up the neck of the Mk6 step extruder. I suspect Mk7 step
extruders don’t have this issue as they have such a short distance
between there drive and heated block. This short distance would
eliminate soggy PLA jamming on the sides of the cylindrical walls.
With a Mk6 extruder however, heat traveling up the neck caused the low
melting point PLA to go soft and jam on the cylindrical walls. It’s
much like trying to push a piece of soft spaghetti through a tight
straw. Not easy. Cooling the neck makes the 3mm PLA harder and easier
to push through.
