Dear friends,
As many of you know, I started my children's book writing career by selling picture book manuscripts to traditional publishers. But I gradually evolved into publishing my own children's books and those of my wife -- originals plus reissues of books from my earlier publishers -- under the imprint name Skyhook Press. (That's named after the skyhooks used by Slappy Hooper in my retelling of his tall tale legend.)
Over the years, Skyhook has grown well beyond my original ideas for it, now comprising about three dozen titles/editions. (That's not counting my reader's theater books and my upcoming series for storytelling and reading aloud, both under Shepard Publications.) So this year, I decided to take Skyhook a major step forward by joining the Children's Book Council, the professional association of children's book publishers in the US. Our little press is now listed beside the companies I first published with!
As a newcomer, Skyhook Press was welcomed by the CBC this month with an online profile that tells how we started, what we're up to now, and what we hope for the future. If you'd like a look behind the scenes at the council's newest and no doubt tiniest member, visit
