Essay Topic

The following appeared as an editorial in a wildlife journal.

"Arctic deer live on islands in Canada's arctic region. They search
for food by moving over ice from island to island during the course of
a year. Their habitat is limited to areas warm enough to sustain the
plants on which they feed, and cold enough, at least some of the year,
for the ice to cover the sea separating the islands, allowing the deer
to travel over it. Unfortunately, according to reports from local
hunters, the deer populations are declining. Since these reports
coincide with recent global warming trends that have caused the sea
ice to melt, we can conclude that the decline in arctic deer
populations is the result of deer being unable to follow their age-old
migration patterns across the frozen sea."

Argument

The notion that the arctic deer populations are declining in
numbers due to recent global warming trends seems at first glance an
obvious conclusion. After all, the environment changes may cause the
arctic deer hard to survive such as unable to follow their old
migration patterns across the frozen sea. However, the conclusion is
not announced by any authentic source and thereby is very
unconvincing.

First of all, the author was quick to assume that there is a
decline in the arctic deer population. The arctic deer are declining
in numbers are reported by the local hunters who are not expert in
animal’s living pattern. The rising of the air temperature would cause
the arctic deer to change their migration patterns which the local
hunters might not notice. Therefore, it is very possible that the
arctic deer have migrated to other region instead of declining in
number.

Although it is true that global warming has caused the ice in
Polar Regions to melt, there is no obvious evidence that it is the
reason of the arctic deer decline in number. Moreover, the trends of
global warming are not represent that the islands in Canada’s arctic
region also rise in temperature. It is possible that the air
temperature in arctic region remains constant or is lower than before.
The author was not only quick to assume that there is a decline in the
arctic deer population, but also overlooked any causes of this, other
than the global warming trends. There can be different reasons for the
decline of the arctic deer. The arctic deer population decrease in
number may possible due to the local hunter’s over hunting. It could
also be due to their natural habitat being disturbed by increasing
human interference, or due to increasing in numbers of their
predators.

Overall, the reason behind arctic deer populations are declining
in numbers seems logical as represented above since the recent global
warming trends have change the environment of their habitat. However,
as I have mentioned above, there are many possible cause for the
arctic deer populations declining. Before making conclusions, the
author should evaluate all possible alternatives and causes for the
arctic deer populations declining. The argument given by the editorial
in a wildlife journal is lack of evidence. The author should have
supported it with more reliable statistical data.

I will suggest that you could use different words here
such as "attributed to"

This essay is awesome. You should be no problem with argument in your
AWA.
