I appreciate any suggestion you can provide.

As we all know, many Audio Visual devices are moving to POE.

We find ourselves in need of a good but simply POE voltage and amperage tester.

So I am seeking suggestions.

What do you have on your test bench or in your field bag?

Are there any units that could be left in line to record over time?

Thank you.

I recently purchased the
NetAlly LinkSprinter 300 network tester to assist with network documentation.
It provides POE voltage measurement as part of the summary report

I like to keep Triplett PoE Tester Pro POE2000 in my bag to check POE voltage and amperage. It's small and easy to use. The reason I got this one is because it test up to 100W (802.3bt - Type 4). It also test proprietary standards as well, which can be convenient depending on what you are testing. (TRENDnet TC-NTP1 Inline PoE Tester looks to be exactly the same as the Triplett and about 30 dollars cheaper.)

It does not record data, but I like that idea. That would be a good feature to have, especially with troubleshooting issues.

After searching the internet for about 30 or so minutes, I finally found an "Inline PoE Data Logger" called Log4 PoE. Looks like it started as a kickstarted back in 2015. It states that it: " displays accurate readings of voltage, current, and power while also simultaneously logging all measurement data to a MicroSD card". Looking at the specs, it appears that it does not run off the PoE power itself (I'm guessing for more accurate data reading/recording). It appears that it has a battery said to run for ~5 days and is charged via microUSB. Seems like a neat little device, but of course it is not made by a big manufacturer like Fluke or Triplett, so it seems like you're getting more experimental/developmental product that may not be as user friendly if a big manufacturer did develop it. I'm tempted myself to get it just to try it out.

Hope this helps,
Michael Johnson
