Sequani Limited are a
Contract Research Organisation (CRO) previously named Toxicol Laboratories
England and Quintiles UK and have been in existance in Ledbury since the
early 1970s.
Sequani Limited practice acute
toxicity tests, reproduction toxicology tests, carcinogenicity tests and
repeat dose toxicology tests on live animals. The animal test subjects
include beagle dogs, rabbits, genetically stunted pigs known as 'minipigs',
transgenic mice, rats and guinea pigs. Below are detailed descriptions of the
tests that this company performs.
Acute Toxicity Tests: Acute
toxicity studies in mammals are conducted to measure a chemical’s capacity to
cause harm or death with a single dose. Chemicals are administered to animals
in extremely high doses via at least two of the following routes:
•
Oral –– chemicals are pumped directly into the animal’s stomach via
a force-feeding tube or syringe. • Skin –– chemicals are painted onto the
shaved and abraded skin on the animal’s back. • Inhalation –– animals are
either confined in an inhalation chamber or restrained with a breathing
apparatus fixed over their mouths.
Acute toxicity studies inflict hideous
suffering on animals, who may endure severe abdominal pain; diarrhea;
bleeding from the nose, mouth and genitals; convulsions; seizures and
paralysis before they are poisoned to death or killed by the
experimenter.
Reproduction Toxicology: Reproductive toxicity studies in
mammals are conducted to measure a chemical’s effects on reproductive organs
and fertility. Such tests are based on a repeated dose toxicity study
in rodents, during which animals are examined for changes in
sexual behaviour, sperm and egg production and fertilisation, development
in the uterus and after birth, and hormonal activity. At the conclusion
of the study the animal’s genitals and reproductive organs are
often removed for further study. Animals in reproductive toxicity
studies suffer not only from the toxic effects of the chemical
under investigation, but also as a result of frequent and often
stressful handling, restraint and inhumane force-feeding
practices.
Carcinogenicity tests: Carcinogenicity studies are conducted
to measure a chemical’s cancer-causing potential following lifelong
exposure. Carcinogenicity studies call for the use of both rats and mice and
can kill more than 800 animals per test. Animals in these studies
are exposed to toxic chemicals for their entire lives through their
food, their skin or the air they breathe. Carcinogenicity studies can go
on for up to five years, during which animals can endure extended
suffering from chemical- poisoning as their bodies are overcome by tumours
and cancerous growths.
Repeat dose Toxicology: Repeated dose toxicity
studies expose animals to repeated low doses of chemicals for one to three
months to measure the effects of multiple chemical exposures on organs such
as the liver, kidneys, lungs, heart and nervous system. Chemicals are
usually force-fed to animals orally, although skin and inhalation routes
are also used. These studies are typically conducted using two
different species of animal, one rodent (rat, mouse, etc.) and one
nonrodent (usually dogs). Repeated dose studies are highly stressful and
cruel, as animals are subjected to frequent handling, restraint and
inhumane force-feeding practices, in addition to suffering the toxic effects
of the chemical under investigation. The animals can suffer
excessive salivation, anaemia, muscle weakness, hair loss, internal organ
damage, pilo-erection (hair standing on end), vomiting (in dogs),
diarrhoea, coma and even death.
Anti-vivisection protests have
been held at this laboratory for over 20 years. The current campaign against
Sequani limited focuses not only on the lab itself but also on the companies
that provide services to the lab.
If you are interested in campaigning
against Sequani laboratories, be it leafletting and helping to inform the
public, writing letters, holding stalls and fundraising, attending the
protests outside the lab or joining the protests at the premises of companies
that supply the lab, please get in touch.
For more information on the
campaign against Sequani limited please email worceste...@airpost.net
*Worcestershire Animal Info has taken over from the now Defunct
People Against Cruelty to Animals - West Midlands website. The former name
of that group and its website, have now been dropped for security
reasons. Sequani limited had no hand in the deletion of the PACA website or
the deletion of the umbrella name for campaigners 'PACA - West
Midlands'. Details of supplier companies to Sequani are constantly updated
and freely available on request from the WAI email address and elsewhere
on the internet. The campaign against Sequani limited will never be
over until Sequani stop animal testing altogether, or are closed
down altogether*
Couriers, haulage firms, builders, plumbers,
electricians, vehicle rental firms, cleaners, gas, chemical and lab equipment
suppliers, anyone that does business with Sequani ltd, all play their part
in strengthening the backbone of this death factory.
It's up to all of
us who care about the animals that are suffering and dying in unnecessary,
unscientific experiments at Sequani labs to help persuade these companies to
cut their business ties with animal cruelty by stopping doing business with
Sequani ltd.
If you would like to play a part in the campaign against
Sequani animal testing labs but can't make the demos, please write to, email
or phone the companies listed on this page and ask them (politely) to
consider withdrawing their business association with Sequani Ltd on
ethical, moral and compassionate grounds.

Because of the highly paranoid
and secretive nature of Sequani Ltd, other companies that are involved with
them may not be fully aware of what goes on behind Sequanis closed doors ...
It's time to LET THEM KNOW! Five companies that have severed their ties with
Sequani said they didn't have a clue what went on there!
Remember that
every email sent, every letter written and every phone call made to these
companies is in itself an extremely effective way to protest!
TAKING
PRECAUTIONS:
Use the prefix 141 before ringing these companies if you
want your anonymity kept intact, better still, use a public phone box and
the prefix. More than two emails can be classed as harassment (depending
on what you say in the mail) try and use different email accounts or
you could use a computer in a public library.
THEIR ONLY HOPE,
YOU!:
You are the laboratory animals last and only hope. They sit in
cages and pens waiting for that terrifying moment when the vivisectors come
for them to poison them and tear them apart. We cannot fail them. If
you care about the animals please get on to these companies right
away.
We can safely forget about government and authority lending a
helping hand to aid those that are suffering and dying at the hands of
big business.
Only together, can we stop or at least slow the murder
rate down at Sequani limited and every other animal torturing centre and make
life very uncomfortable and costworthy for the animal abusers. Please,
Just Do It.
