THE CALL: December 23, 2025

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has signed a bill that prohibits the hand capture and killing of horseshoe crabs from the waters and shoreline of the state. Under the new law, the killing of horseshoe crabs for commercial or biomedical purposes will be phased out over a three-year transition period (the quota will go down 25% each year), with the full prohibition taking effect beginning in 2029.

Friends of Animals brought the plight of horseshoe crabs to the attention of NY Assemblymember Deborah Glick—who knows the Fire Island shore well, which is among the prime habitats for horseshoe crabs—and helped advocate for the legislation when she introduced it.

We also led the charge to get a similar ban passed in Connecticut in 2023.

It is quite a feat to get a bill like this passed, and we are very proud to have played a role. To support our future legislative endeavors, please consider making a donation so we can continue to make these life-saving changes possible.

In 2025, Friends of Animals continued expanding its affordable spay/ neuter program. While affordable certificates are always available, FoA decided to heighten its impact a bit more.

This year, your donation dollars helped to create three certificate giveaways totaling a value of over $35,000. In these, local residents were asked to call to receive one of a limited number of free certificates on a first-come, first-serve basis. The free certificate could then be exchanged for a breeding control surgery with the participating veterinarian. Please consider a year-end donation so we can continue these giveaways in 2026Donate here.

In November, the Trump Administration gave an early Christmas present to the extractive industries that profit from wildlife destruction by proposing four major regulation changes that would undermine the Endangered Species Act.

If these changes existed decades ago, the bald eagle, grizzly bear and humpback whale, to mention a few, might have been wiped out! The ESA is a critical tool to save animals from extinction and human exploitation, with around 99% of listed species still surviving.

Friends of Animals works tirelessly to protect species under the ESA, including vibrant scarlet macaws facing illegal poaching and trade; Utah prairie dogs losing their burrows amid habitat destruction, and ancient horseshoe crabs bled dry for profit.

I’ve returned to an Italian kitchen to show you how to make a healthy, delicious vegan meal this winter, which includes antipasto salad, a traditional first course of an Italian meal, which doesn’t have meat or cheese and stimulates your palate for the other dishes.

The entrée is Pasta alla Norma, a delectable, classic Sicilian pasta with roasted eggplant, marinara and basil. Dessert is my absolute favorite sweet treat—a vegan cannoli, filled with mini dark chocolate chips and garnished with crushed pistachios.

Who doesn’t remember cannoli as one of their best-loved treats from a bakery, and who knew we could make our own without sacrificing anything?
