Did you know horseshoe crabs are survivors from more than 450 million years ago, long before the dinosaurs? They are sentient beings able to sense pain, light, and the shifting tides that have guided their migrations for eons. They are vital to coastal ecosystems. Their eggs sustain endangered red knots and other migrating shorebirds, and their presence helps maintain the delicate balance of our shorelines.
But their survival is now in jeopardy. Every year, horseshoe crabs are harvested by commercial fisheries for bait and bled by the biomedical industry for testing — practices that are cruel, outdated, and devastating to their populations.
Last year, the New York State Legislature passed the Horseshoe Crab Protection Act with bipartisan support, but Governor Kathy Hochul vetoed it, leaving horseshoe crabs unprotected.
Now, there’s another chance to do the right thing.
The Act has again passed with bipartisan support — and is waiting for just one signature: the Governor’s.

Tell Gov. Hochul: Sign the Horseshoe Crab Protection Act and give these ancient beings a future. New York’s coastlines — and one of Earth’s oldest living species — can’t survive another veto.
