appreciate the help of the US Fish and Wildlife Service in providing
this preliminary information promptly. A staggering 27,905 monkeys
were imported to the United States in 2008, with most of the doomed
animals coming from China. Ironically, the species most traded from
China, the crab-eating macaque, is not native to China - but China
appears to be vacuuming up the monkeys from its neighbor countries
and rapaciously plundering their national treasures. One of the
Cambodian dealers operates close to a World Heritage nature reserve
(Tonle Sap).

What makes things even worse is that some Big Pharma firms are
setting up labs in China, with plans to collect large colonies of
monkeys. Reasons for preference for China include no or minimal
animal protection laws. Plus there are few if any "pests" like all of us to
protest abuses!
Of the 27905 imported primates, a trifling 619 were classified as
"Wild caught," 7373 as "Born in captivity (F1+ generations)" and
19913 as "Captive bred." There are strong suspicions that many
animals claimed to be "captive-born" were actually wild-caught but
proof is hard to come by.
