Dear Candace,
Imagine you’re an
immigrant mom, and you just became a citizen. You've been separated from
your eldest daughter for 15 years, and you can’t wait to reunite. She’s
now 34 and married, and still lives in your home country. Now that
you’re a citizen, you’re excited you can finally sponsor her to join you
in America and your family can be together again. But you learn that,
because she’s over 30, the new immigration law won’t let you.
Maybe you know this story.
Twenty six days ago,
the US Senate introduced S.744, the Border Security, Economic
Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act. Like all bills, it has
some good, some bad, and some concerning pieces. Let’s make sure that
the bill making it to the finish line is the best it can be.
The pace at which this bill is moving is monumental - and calls for our collective action!
NAPAWF is hosting a
briefing for our chapters and members across the country to discuss the
state of play as well as ways you can take action to make sure this bill
reflects what our community needs.
Please join us on Friday, May 17th, 2013 at 3:00 PM EST/ 12:00PM PST
to learn more about what the bill entails, how it affects Asian
American and Pacific Islander women, and what policy changes we are
advocating for. We hope this will be an opportunity for you to
voice any questions and concerns, and for us to present ideas for how
you can take action in your communities.
Dial-in details will be
forthcoming. Additionally, please note that a number of our ally
organizations will also be joining the call to share updates and plans
you can get involved in. Please RSVP to Fayzan Gowani at fayz....@gmail.com by Thursday, May 16, 2013.
Many thanks,
The NAPAWF Team
