Asian American Justice Center Responds to Representative Emanuel’s Disturbing Comments on Comprehensive Immigration Reform

Washington, D.C. – The Asian American Justice Center (AAJC) is extremely disturbed by recent statements by Representative Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) that put comprehensive immigration reform on hold until at least 2013. Emanuel, the chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, blamed President Bush and Republicans for the failed Senate immigration bill, but predicted that the Democratic Party would not attempt a comprehensive reform of the broken U.S. immigration system until the second term of a prospective Democratic president.

“In the weeks since the Senate immigration bill was defeated by immigration restrictionists, we have seen an increase in anti-immigrant measures at both the federal and local levels,” said AAJC President and Executive Director Karen K. Narasaki. “In this environment, America needs leaders who are committed to finding fair and humane solutions to our immigration problems. We do not need more anti-immigrant policies disguised as immigration reform and we cannot accept more excuses for not getting the job done.”

“AAJC urges Asian Americans to call Representative Emanuel at (202) 225-4061 or (773) 267-5926 to remind him that our families and communities cannot wait any longer for immigration reform,” said George C. Wu, AAJC staff attorney and NAPABA Partners Community Law Fellow. “We all need to encourage the Democratic members of the House of Representatives to address comprehensive reform before the 2008 elections and to provide the leadership America deserves.”
