Hello,
My name is Claudia, and I am writing on behalf of the International Women’s Media Foundation.
We are excited to share our current opportunities open now! To spread the word, we would love it if you could share these opportunities on social media and encourage folks in your network to apply.
Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award
Through the Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award, the International Women’s Media Foundation celebrates women and nonbinary photojournalists whose work inspires us to take action and better understand the world. This Award was created with a generous
$1 million gift from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation and honors the life and work of Pulitzer Prize-winning AP photographer and IWMF Courage in Journalism Award winner Anja Niedringhaus (1965-2014). The IWMF seeks candidates whose work reflects Anja’s values,
through compassion, humanity, and a commitment to capturing the whole picture. In Anja’s words, “I do my job simply to report on people’s courage with my camera and my heart.”
Our 2024 winners were Samar Abu Elouf (Palestine), Anastasia Taylor-Lind (U.K., Sweden), and Nariman El Mofty (Egypt, Canada). You can reference our website for more information, including
application
guidelines, an FAQ,
and the portfolios
of past honorees. With this Award, we believe that courage exists in many forms and goes well beyond covering the frontlines of conflict.
Photojournalists can
apply by March 14, 2025, or you may nominate a photojournalist via
Google
Form. We accept third-party and self-nominations.
More
information here, including application guidelines, frequently asked questions, and the portfolios of past honorees.
If you could also share this opportunity with your network, we would appreciate it! Below, I have included a sample post language you can use to promote the award.
Courageous journalism doesn’t just happen on the frontlines or in conflict.
@IWMF's #AnjasCourage in Photojournalism Award honors women & nonbinary photojournalists that report with their heart, just as Anja did. Apply or nominate by March 14:

Courage in Journalism Award
The IWMF’s annual Courage in Journalism Awards honor women and nonbinary journalists who set themselves apart by exhibiting extraordinary bravery, persistence and resilience. These journalists report on taboo topics, immerse themselves in hostile environments
and share difficult truths. In addition, the honorees demonstrate a commitment to press freedom and often overcome unjust conditions online and offline to become leaders in their industry.
Our 2024 Courage in Journalism Award winners were Lauren Chooljian (US), Mónica Velásquez Villacís (Ecuador), and Shin Daewe (Myanmar).
Candidates for the Courage in Journalism Awards must be full-time staff or freelance women or nonbinary reporters, writers, editors, photographers or producers working in any country and of any nationality. In particular, we are seeking nominations of journalists
who are detained, jailed or imprisoned for the Wallis Annenberg Justice for Women Journalists Award.
Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship
Now in its 21st year, the
Elizabeth
Neuffer Fellowship was created in memory of The Boston Globe correspondent and IWMF Courage in Journalism Award (1998) winner Elizabeth Neuffer, who died while reporting in Iraq on May 9, 2003.
The Elizabeth Neuffer Fellow will complete research and coursework at MIT’s Center for International Studies and journalism internships at The Boston Globe (Opinion Desk) and The New York Times (Breaking News). Arranged
by the IWMF, they will be based in Boston from February to May 2026, and in New York from June to July 2026.
The Neuffer Fellowship is designed for women and nonbinary journalists with at least three years of professional experience in journalism working in print, broadcast, or digital media, either as a staff journalist or as
a freelancer. All nationalities are welcome to apply but non-native English speakers must have excellent written and verbal English skills in order to fully participate in and benefit from the program.
Please feel free to reach out with any questions.
Thank you!
