What to Give?
For some of you there are only 10 days left to buy holiday gifts for clients, friends and family. We would really like to help you out with that.
You can visit our
store, buy a friend a copy of
Design Like You Give a Damn, make a
donation on behalf of a client--and support good design all at the same time. The first twelve people to donate $250 or more, will receive a custom designed Hope for Humanity T-shirt. (see below)
This winter some companies are helping including
Buro Happold,
Contract Associates, Inc in New Mexico,
Sun Microsystems are all running internal giving programs and matching any of their employees contributions to us. If you or a friend works for one of them or a company that also matches employee contributions – double your giving and
help us expand our reach.
Over the past year we've continued our post-tsunami work in South East Asia, helped families back in their homes or in new ones on the Gulf Coast after Katrina, supported the building of orphanages and medical facilities in Tanzania,
launched the
Open Architecture Network, responded to the Peru Earthquake and the
Southern California wildfires. More than 45 chapters have been involved in a range of work in their own neighborhoods. Collectively Architecture for Humanity has engaged over 4,700 designers from around the world making us one of the
worlds' largest professional 501c3 design organizations. This year, our eighth year in operation, was a milestone for us as we completed our 100th project.
We couldn't have done it without you. Thank you.

Buy a 2x4 for New Orleans
The good folks at Project Agape, who developed and run the Causes app on Facebook, selected us out of 22,000 facebook NGOs to be part of their holiday gift giving appeal. Right now for $10
you can buy someone a 2x4 help build
The Guardians' Institute, a community center and cultural museum for the Mardi Gras Indians in the heart of New Orleans designed by Rockwell Group.
Additionally the Case Foundation is giving $1000 a day and a grand prize of $50,000 as part of a facebook
giving challenge. We are in the running (currently 5th in the tables) and if you are a facebook member and want to donate there then
fire away and drive us to the top of the charts.
With less than 8% spent on administration and general operating costs, we direct more than 80% of funds raised on building solutions. Remember design matters, so please help us to build a more equitable, environmentally sound and just
world. |

AMD Open Architecture Challenge Update
Happy Valentines Day from AMD and Architecture for Humanity - Submission Deadline Extended
Last week we informed all current registrants that we have extended the competition deadline to February 14, 2008 as site information took longer than expected and we also wanted to give schools from the Southern Hemisphere an equal
opportunity to compete while they were in session. On December 15th--this Saturday--the registration fee will increase from $25 to $35 ($0 for entries from developing nations). The entry fees will be divided equally amongst the
three site winners for enable them to work and meet the clients on site – and yes, if you win all three we do expect you to take your holiday next year in the great plains of Africa, the heart of the Amazon jungle and the foothills of the
Himalayan mountains. There are 63 days left and counting.....
Davos isn't just for Bono: Your design at the 2008 World Economic Forum.
Our friends at the 50x15 initiative at AMD have organized an incredible opportunity for challenge entrants. Selected entries that are complete and uploaded to their competition entry on the OAN by Jan 15th, the original submission
date, will be presented at the 2008 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in front of hundreds of world leaders. Beyond having your talents presented to an audience of global influencers perhaps one of them might be so enamored with
your solution they may fund your design themselves. Maybe even Bono might want to pitch in.
New images and video from the sites
Check out new images from
Nepal and
Kenya. In the next week videos will be uploaded to the respective challenge pages.

Design the AFH HQ
Last month we moved into our new (and with your help, soon to be swank) office space in San Francisco. We're calling on designers in the Bay Area to come and help us redesign it. The space will house a workshop, pin-up space, a community
design studio, meeting rooms, exhibition space, and yes, a bar. If you are working on a pro-bono design project and need a place to go, we'd like you to think of it as your studio away from the studio. So far, the good folks from
Steelcase, Teknion and HumanScale are providing furniture and chairs, Interface is providing carpets, and many more sponsors are helping to transform our home-base into a collaborative and working environment.
In short, it's your space. So, if you are in the Bay area, or have some time to spare, why not come help us design it.
'Pimp our space' AFH Charrette:

Nicole Joslin joined us in October as a Biloxi Design/Construction Fellow and is already beginning to take on a southern twang. Nicole Nowak has been working for us through the Americorps program but is now ours--all ours--as a Biloxi
Design/Construction Fellow. Take a look at their work with the Biloxi Model Home Program.
Stacy Jed has been volunteering for us since April, but as of last month is now a Design Fellow. That's what happens when you stick around. We find more for you to do. Stacy is heading up the design of our new space here in San Francisco.
So if you are in the Bay area, give her a shout and get involved.

A special tip of the hat to James Wheeler, gulf coast designer and author of the best named design blog -
Up Your Architecture. James began his involvement with AFH as a student at the University of Minnesota and after doing an alternate spring break in Biloxi decided to shift his focus towards helping families get back in their homes in
Biloxi, MS. Working as a designer for many long months for the Gulf Coast Community Design Center he has decided to move to the coast and keep on, keeping on. Kudos to you.

Chapter News
What If...New York
AFHny, the New York City affiliate chapter of Architecture for Humanity, is hosting the "What if New York City..." competition for post-disaster provisional housing for New York City in the aftermath of a Category 3 hurricane. The
competition is sponsored by The New York City Office of Emergency Management, in affiliation with AFHny and the Rockefeller Foundation. The Office of Emergency Management will award ten prizes of $10,000 and technical expertise for further
development of the winning schemes. Look for a link to the winning schemes as soon as they are announced.
More information visit the AFHny website
Architecture for Humanity New York website.
Also if you are in New York, stop by and purchase a
Gift of Compassion. Proceeds will go to support the efforts of Architecture for Humanity's New York chapter.
Bayview Model Block Project
What if you could rethink an entire block and use design as a catalyst for alleviating sewage issues, violent crime and deaths caused by speeding traffic? That was the challenge given to Architecture for Humanity SF. In partnership with
the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency and the City they are working to reinvent the streetscape of the 1700 Block of Newcomb Avenue. Using simple (but ingenious, if we do say so ourselves) solutions, the chapter is working to address
residents concerns and make the block a safer place to live.
Check out their project. Make a donation to support their work.
New Chapters and 2008
2008 will be the 'year of the chapter' for us and we will be working to strengthen and support our ties to each chapter. New ones are springing up every week and international chapters are beginning to form as far away as South Korea,
Croatia and Rwanda. For those interested in working full time with us, being involved in your local chapter is a great sign of your commitment when we are going through resumes! In the next few weeks we will put up a document of how to
start a chapter in your neighborhood.
