2007 End of Year Letter
Buildings not only have a physical footprint, they have an ethical footprint.

_ What is Your New Year's Design Resolution?
_ 2007 By The Numbers
_ AMD Open Architecture Challenge - 50 days left
_ Job Opportunities
_ Own The Day

Dear all,
I'm sitting here after 18" of snow dumped down in Littleton, Colorado, the well saturated Christmas Pudding has been devoured and the rest of the family are in the midst of modernist vs. post-modern 'fort-building'.

Finally I get to sit down to write our annual Year in Review newsletter. It is hard to imagine that over the past 12 months we have completed our 100th project - compared with just 7 two years ago, more than 14,000 people directly benefited from built solutions and we provided professional design services on four continents, with over 250 volunteers, designers and architects.

I've been truly inspired by the creativity and innovation of our local chapters, by the innovative projects we see on the new Open Architecture Network, by the work of like-minded organizations around the world, and by the feedback and ongoing support we find from people like you, who share our belief that good design matters.

Every Boxing Day I write this newsletter but 2007 was such an incredible year that this email would have been way too exhaustive to read. Therefore, we are taking advantage of our spiffy new web site by posting it there.

Click here to read our 2007 Year in Review.

In the coming year we have a number of exciting projects to be realized, including scaling one of our previous design competitions, ‘open sourcing' our own office space, new chapter focused websites and support and the construction of the winning design for the AMD Open Architecture Challenge.

On behalf of the communities we serve and the architects and designers who have volunteered their time and their talents with us over the past year, we appreciate your support and hope you will join us in an exciting year ahead. Help us bring innovative design to communities in need by making an end of year donation.

Cheers,
Cameron Sinclair
Eternal Optimist and Executive Director

What is Your New Year's Design Resolution?
Now is the time to make those promises that we hate to break - the dreaded New Years resolution. Instead of (re)promising to join that new gym or cut down on coffee we'd love to know what is your design resolution for next year. The best and funniest answers will each win an awesome Alabama Chanin Hope for Humanity handmade T - designed specifically for Architecture for Humanity.

50 day left to enter the AMD Open Architecture Challenge

We are hosting the AMD Open Architecture Challenge with three clients, Kallari Association in Ecuador, SIDAREC in Kenya and Nyaya Health in Nepal. These clients were selected from 108 community groups from around the world by an advisory group made up of forty scientists, engineers, architects and development officials. We completed site visits late fall (the final visit to the Kallari Association takes place tomorrow!) and the team has uploaded photos, videos and information on each site. More information will be uploaded the week of January 2nd.

You have 50 days to go – more than enough time to register and design a solution that will improve the lives of thousands. Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] and the 50x15 initiative is awarding up to $250,000 to implement the winning entry. The funds set aside includes one years operating costs for the community organization to help make this a sustainable venture. Additionally each of the three site winners will be awarded funds (1/3rd of the entry fee) to fly to the site and work with the client to refine your solution. Naturally if funding is secured, we may build all three.

Enter today and design for change*

* Open for anyone creative between the ages of 6 and 106. All designs will be reviewed by the jury.
