02/08 - Architects wanted.

Good morning all,

It has been a busy January as we are about to ramp up a number of projects and are in the midst of hiring a number of folks both in San Francisco and internationally. Last week I was in Switzerland to present the Open Architecture Challenge during the World Economic Forum in Davos. Project sponsor AMD hosted a dinner where we showed a seven minute video of each of the three sites of the challenge. If you are entering, or still thinking about it, I urge you to take a look at the video. Special thanks to Turk Pipkin for putting this together and for joining us on our site visits. Submissions are due on February 29, 2008 (midnight in your time zone) - Beyond the winning design being implemented each site finalist will travel to the client to spend time developing their solution.

We are also extremely thrilled to see one of our previous design competitions develop into a scalable model. The 2004 Siyathemba Competition has now been adapted into the Football for Hope Centres for the 2010 World Cup (see below for details). With the winning solution currently completing construction in Kwa Zulu Natal, we have been working with FIFA and streetfootballworld to incorporate lessons learned into a project to build 20 centers throughout Africa by 2010. For those football (soccer) fans you can cheer every goal scored in the preliminary round as every time one a ball hits the back of the net FIFAs' 2010 partners will donate $500 towards the construction of the facilities. Over the next week we will be compiling a list of interested firms who would like to be apart of this incredible project.

We heart the Gulf Coast. Yup, we're still designing and building like crazy all over the Gulf Coast. The Guillen Residence designed by Loci Architecture is nearly complete and several houses for the Biloxi Model Home Program are wrapping up construction. We will dedicate next month's newsletter on everything that has been happening. In the meantime, to all our design fellows, full time staff and volunteers on the coast enjoy Fat Tuesday this week and party hard for all the great work you've done. We will highlight Gulf Coast projects on the Open Architecture Network on Mardi Gras as a virtual celebration of all the rebuilding success on the ground.

Below are some additional exciting opportunities [ including staff jobs] for architects, designers, artists and all types creative. For those who have been following the TED ticket auction - you have one hour left to bid, bid, bid....

Keep designing like you give a damn.

Cheers,
Cameron Sinclair

Open Architecture Challenge - 26 days to go
With less than 3 and 1/2 weeks to go we are still receiving requests for entering the AMD Open Architecture Challenge. Every continent is now represented and entrants range from secondary school team to retirees. Now the video is up you should have a clear view of each of the three sites and a concise understanding of the need (and impact you can make!). We have finalized the juries and have set dates for when they are taking place. Each of the respective clients are excited to see the entries and to decide who they will eventually partner with to realize their initiatives. ENTER TODAY AND CHANGE LIVES.

Football for Hope : Call for Architects
Since late 2007 we've connected with FIFA and streetfootballworld to develop 20 centres for 2010 as part for the Football for Hope movement and in the run-up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Each facility will include a mini 5-a-side pitch, community facility and will incorporate sustainable materials and renewable energy systems. Each center will be place where football is used as a tool for social change and will be run by a local organization that deals with such issues as health, peace building and reconciliation, education, anti-discrimination and the environment. During the 2010 World Cup, these fields will be seen by an estimated 2 Billion people but more importantly will continue to directly affect the lives of thousands of children. African based and/or practicing firms and former Siyathemba entrants who are interested in designing the centers should email me directly at cameron(at)architectureforhumanity(dot)org for more details on this project. Please note your email subject line with "Football for Hope". We will also be hiring design fellows to work with us on this and other projects in our new office in Paarl, South Africa.

Special consideration will be given to firms who live or work in the following countries: Namibia, Rwanda, Kenya, Ghana, Mali, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Tanzania, Egypt, Morroco, Lesotho, Angola, Zambia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Senegal or South Africa (Cape Town, Pretoria, Jo'Burg, Port Elizabeth and Durban).
