Hi All,

In this email:

  • Results from 2017 Girls Allegro
  • Upcoming Tournaments
    • Autumn Allegro
    • ACT Championships (Junior and Adults)
  • JETS Final Call - Last Day to Apply!!
  • New Ratings released on the 1st of March!
A small group of girls came to participate in last weekend's Girls Allegro event. Despite the low numbers, the girls put on a good showing and showed an excellent fighting spirit. Turner Primary showed why they are one of the best chess school's in Canberra, with the top two place getters coming from Turner. Sulia ended up winning the tournament with a perfect score of 7/7 and was closely followed by her fellow school mate Luu Ha with 6/7.

I'd like to thank my fellow arbiter Saffron Archer for opting to help out on the day, help and encourage some of our younger girls! A big thank you must go to Evelyn for assisting throughout the day and even making & bringing a cake for my birthday this week, which I'm sure all the girls enjoyed! Once again, thanks to all participants and of course Campbell High School. I hope to see you all at the Autumn Allegro tournament on Sunday the 5th of March!

Girls Allegro 2017 Prize Winners:

First: Sulia Van Sebille 7/7 (Turner Primary)

Second: Luu Ha Tran 6/7 (Turner Primary)

Third: Hannah Ni 5/7 (Garran Primary)

Best UNR: Mary David-Hoole 3/7 (St. Monica's)

Full Standings at the end of this email.

2017 Johns-Putra Australian Junior Elite Training Squad (JETS)

Applications are now open for the Junior Elite Training Squad for 2017. JETS is a squad made up of talented and enthusiastic junior chess players from around Australia. The main feature of JETS is a 5 day training camp where players get coached by some of Australia's top coaches for the first three days. They then participate in a training tournament and finally get to play in a simultaneous exhibition against one of the coaches.

This year the JETS camp will be held in Canberra from 3-7 July, though the venue is not yet confirmed. 30 players will be selected in total, with at least 1/3 being female places. Most of the applicants that are selected are under 14, but older players have gotten in in the past. For the first time the JETS organisers have decided that 6 spots in the squad would be reserved for the hosting state or territory, which in this case is Canberra! This is a fantastic opportunity to improve your chess with some of Australia's best, whilst having a lot of fun and meeting new juniors.

To be eligible to apply for the squad, you must have played the 2017 Australian Open, 2017 Australian Juniors or 2017 Oceania Zonal. If you wish to apply please go to the Australian Junior Chess League website: http://australianjuniorchess.org.au/ . Applications for the squad close on Monday February 20. Please contact the Selections Coordinator Alana Chibnall alanac...@hotmail.com if you have any questions.

New ACF quick and long time ratings released on the 1st of March - stay tuned!

Cheers,
Emma
