Hi All

In this email:
  • Reminder for High Schools Championship this Sunday 25 October (flyer attached)
  • Results
    • ACT Junior Championships
    • Primary School Championships
  • Upcoming events:
    • Under 8 and Under 10 Championships - Sunday 8 November (Flyer attached)
    • 2020 Annual General Meeting of ACT Junior Chess League - Sunday 8 November
REMINDER - High Schools Championship 25 October - flyer attached

Due to Covid-19 restrictions the ACT Junior Chess League will be holding its interschool events in a different format for this year. The Secondary School Players will be run on 25th October and the flyer is attached. Importantly, the events will be held on Sunday at Campbell High School Library. There is no expectation that the school will organise the players, with entry being the responsibility of individual players and parents.

There is still plenty of space for entries, but if you can enter early this would be appreciated. A flyer for this event is attached.

It is also important to note that this is an individual event, so even if there are only 1 or 2 players from your school that are able to attend, that is both fine and encouraged.

RESULTS

ACT Junior Championships - Congratulations Dexuan Kong

The 2020 ACT Junior Chess Championship has been won by Dexuan Kong, with an impressive 8.5/9. He won 8 games and only conceded a single draw to Somon Vos. Somon Vos was also undefeated in 2nd place on 7.5 points, but conceded draws to Kong, Minchen Yang and Kevin Wong.

Somon Vos won the Under 12 Championship, while Erin Mile won the 2020 ACT Girls Champion title with 6/9, and Shakthi Karthik was the Under 12 Girls Champion on 4/9.
A number of players also played well enough to earn international (FIDE) ratings or part ratings, with Shriya Karthik, Kevin Wong and Siddharth Banerjea playing enough games to have a rating published on the next list.

Primary Schools Allegro Results - Congratulations Kevin Wong, Sami Li, Turner Primary and St Monicas.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2020 ACT Primary School Chess Final. We had 62 players on the day from 16 different schools. I would like to especially thank all the parents and teachers who took time out from their usual weekend activities to accompany the children who played in the event.

The team scores were calculated based on the best 4 scorers from each school. This was for both the Open and Girl's sections, although a score could be used for a single team only.

Open
1st Turner 19.5 (Sami Li, Minchen Yang, Shakthi Karthik, Nomon Vos)
2nd Kaleen 19.0 (Hunter Sanchez, Michael Shen-Zhao, Masaki Horikawa, Andrew Wang)
3rd Grammar 18.5 (Siddharth Banerjea, Rohintash Mathur, Jayden Tran, Adeline Tran)

***Please note that one of the children lost a white unicorn bag at the tournament last Sunday. If your child has accidently collected this bag, could you please let us know so we can return it to the child.

Upcoming Event - Under 8/10 Championships Sunday 8 November - flyer attached

This year, we are combining the Under 8 and 10 Championships. This event is suitable for all eligible players who can confidently move the chess pieces around the board.  Chess Clocks will be used. Participants in the event will range from potential grandmasters to (almost) complete novices.  All players compete for all rounds (unless byes occur).  Nobody is “eliminated” during the day.

A minimum of seven rounds will be played with each player having 15 minutes to complete their moves (maximum game time 30 minutes).  At the completion of the final round, trophies will be presented to the Under 8 Champion, Under 10 Champion, 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th placegetters.  Additional prizes include a "Rising Star" award (for a most improved player), "Young Champion" (for a player in Year 2 or below) and first Under 6.  All children will receive a participation ribbon.

Annual General Meeting - Sunday 8 November
The ACT Junior Chess League is looking for volunteers to take up several positions on the committee. The committee is involved in the organisation and smooth running of tournaments, junior chess clubs, school events and coaching in the ACT and surrounding areas. The AGM is also an opportunity to discuss the health of junior chess in the ACT and ideas for the future.
Please attend, even if only to show your support and ensure we have the necessary numbers for a quorum.
The AGM will be followed by a meeting of the newly elected committee.
The details of this meeting are as follows:
Date: Sunday 8 November 2020
Time: 10 am for a 10:15 am start
Place: Campbell High School - Library.

Kind regards

Emma

REMINDER - Upcoming Event - Under 8/10 Championships Sunday 8 November - flyer attached

Vikings Weekender - Open to adults and juniors - 21-22 November - entries are limited.

The ACT Chess Association and the Tuggeranong Chess Club are holding the 2020 Vikings Weekender Chess Tournament on the 21st and 22nd November 2020. The venue is the Lanyon Club, Heidelberg St, Condor, ACT.

There is an Open section (all players are eligible) and an Under 1600 section. Both events will be 6 round tournaments with a time limit of 60m+10s per game. The tournament will be ACF rated (not FIDE rated) and entry restrictions and pairings will be based on ACF ratings as at 21 November.

Pre-registration is strictly required for this event. At this stage there is a limit of 60 players total allowed. This is a Vikings Club stipulation to satisfy current Covid-19 restrictions. Interstate registrations are welcome on the understanding that changing pandemic circumstances might result in ultimate exclusion in such cases.

Registration: Entries beyond the 60 player limit will be added to a wait list and there is every chance that by 21 November local Covid restrictions might be eased.

Please send your details and any queries to: camcunn...@gmail.com

Entry Fees:

$65
$45 Concession
$45 Junior (Under 18)
GM, IM, WGM, WIM Free

In addition, because this is an ACTCA event, you might need to pay ACTCA membership dues for 2020 ($25 or $15 juniors and concessionals). Because it so late in 2020 the ACTCA will grant late joiners an extension of their membership to end-2021, covering all 2021 ACTCA events including Lightning Championships, ACT Championships, ANU Open/Minor, Vikings Weekender, Rapid Championships and possible other tournaments.

Interstate registrants are expected to be members of their ACF-affiliated state associations.

Consistent with the strict pre-registration requirement we request all entry fees to be pre-paid. This will streamline start of play for Round 1 and help satisfy Covid distancing requirements. Should the tournament not proceed for any reason all fees will be promptly refunded.

Fees (including ACTCA membership) should be paid by direct bank transfer/deposit to the ACTCA account -

Results - Under 8/10 Championships Sunday 8 November

This year, we combined the Under 8 and 10 Championships and had 28 participants competing from all over Canberra. The tournament featured some of ACT's strongest players and several newcomers to watch out for in the future. Overall, the tournament and ACT Under 10 Champion title was awarded to Charles Huang who scored a perfect score of 7/7. Meanwhile, the Under 8 Champion title was decided by a playoff between Nicholas Lee and Shivani Sundar who scored an impressive 5/7. The match was hard fought and ultimately Nicholas Lee was crowned the new ACT Under 8 Champion.

Congratulations to all players and our prize winners. I was very impressed with the display of sportsmanship and enthusiasm from all kids. I'd like to thank all our wonderful volunteers and helpers who assisted to make the day run smoothly. I'd also like to thank Campbell High School for allowing us to use their wonderful library as our venue.
