The ACTJCL will hold the 2023 ACT Junior Rapid Championships on Sunday 21 May at Campbell High School (Library). We have 12 trophies on offer for the event - see attached flyer.
Last Sunday, the ACTJCL hosted the 2023 ACT Junior Rapid Championships at Campbell High School. We were at full capacity, with a total of 64 participants competing in the two events with a 15 minutes plus 10 seconds per move tournament format.
In the Under 18 section, we had a total of 22 participants competing over six rounds. All games were extremely well fought out and, in the end, top seed Charles Huang, was undefeated and crowned the 2023 ACT Under 18 Rapid Champion scoring 5/6. Meanwhile, we had Masaki Horikawa and Larry Cheng paired in the last round against each other and the game ended in a draw with both players finishing with 4.5/6. After a quick break, the two players competed in a one game tiebreak match which again finished in an exciting draw. At the end, all that separated the two was the smallest of tiebreak margins which resulted in Masaki Horikawa being awarded the ACT Under 16 Rapid Champion and Larry Cheng being awarded the ACT Under 14 Rapid Champion title respectively. A special congratulations also to Pinipa Liyanage who was awarded the 2023 ACT Girl Under 18 Rapid Champion.
In the Under 12 section, we had a total of 42 participants and we managed to complete seven rounds. At the end of the tournament, top seed Jerry Cheng was crowned the 2023 ACT Under 12 Rapid Champion with a perfect score of 7/7. Nicholas Lee finished second overall with 6/7 and there was a large contingent of players scoring 5/7, including Louis Chen the 2023 ACT Under 10 Rapid Champion and unrated player Jonny Chen the 2023 ACT Under 8 Rapid Champion, respectively. Another notable performance was from unrated player Max Pedregosa also scoring 5/7, who narrowly missed out on tiebreaks. Close behind, we had Mahi Hedge scoring 4/7 to be awarded the ACT Girl Under 12 Rapid Champion, and young Echo Feng, eligible for the Under 8 category, awarded the ACT Girl Under 10 Rapid Champion.
Congratulations to all prize winners and thank you to everyone who participated in the event and Campbell High School. I'd also especially like to thank you all for your patience and flexibility on the day as we managed record numbers and technical issues which delayed the tournament start time.
The tournaments' standings can be found attached to this email.
