Membership of the ACT Junior Chess League provides a discount of $5 per tournament entry, as well as allowing you to enter a limited number of ACT Chess Association (Open) events and participate in development activities. Membership is $15 per year for a single player or $20 for a family membership.

Please also note that you must be a ACT Junior Chess League Member to participate in our junior chess clubs.

2023 ACT Junior Lightning Championships - Sunday 26 February (flyer attached)

Lightning Chess is just what you think - it's chess played at lightning speed! Each player has only 5 minutes on the clock to complete all moves. It makes Lightning Chess fast, fun, and not for the faint-hearted! Most normal rules of chess apply however if a King is left in check at the conclusion of a move (ie once a clock has been pressed) an opponent may claim a win as a consequence of an “illegal move.” Games can then be won on time, by checkmate, and as a consequence of an illegal move but not by capturing the king! All children will receive a participation ribbon.

When: Sunday 26 February 2023. Registration starts at 12:45pm and players should be ready to start at 1pm. Prize giving at around 4.30pm.
Where: Campbell High School Hall, Treloar Crescent, Campbell
Who: Children born on or after 1 January 2003
Cost: $15 per child ($20 for non-members). Third and subsequent child from the same family is free

2023 Autumn Junior Allegro - Sunday 26 March (flyer attached)

This event is suitable for all eligible players who can confidently move the chess pieces around the board. Chess Clocks will be used. Participants in the event will range from potential grandmasters to (almost) complete novices. All players compete for all rounds (unless byes occur). Nobody is “eliminated” during the day. A minimum of seven rounds will be played with each player having 15 minutes to complete their moves (maximum game time 30 minutes). Players can expect to be playing against others of a similar level from the third or fourth round onwards. With trophies for the top players, and other prizes this will be a fun day for all. All children will receive a participation ribbon.

When: Sunday 26 March 2023. Registration starts at 9:45pm. Play commences 10am and prize giving at around 2:45pm.
Where: Campbell High School Hall, Treloar Crescent, Campbell
Who: Children born on or after 1 January 2003
Cost: $20 per child $25 for non-members). Third and subsequent child from the same family is free

Doeberl Cup and 2023 Oceania Youth Championships

Congratulations to all juniors who participated in the 2023 Doeberl Cup and the 2023 Oceania Youth Championships!

The Doeberl Cup featured over 400 players in the five events, which has set a record for being the largest open event in Australia's history. We had plenty of current and former ACT juniors and coaches competing in the various events and it was wonderful to see so much interest in chess. The tournament results can be located on the Official website here. A special congratulations to ACT juniors Nicholas LeeDaniel Spencer, Leon Sostaric, Eshaan Extross and Dexuan Kong for their performances in the Under 1200 and Minor events.

Following a busy Easter long weekend, a number of our juniors backed it up with the 2023 Oceania Youth Championships. The event was organised by Shaun Press with the support of the ACTJCL, Oceania Chess Federation, Asian Chess Federation and FIDE. The event featured almost 200 participants from the Oceania National Chess Federations. The tournament was a fantastic opportunity for our juniors to compete amongst the best in our region. The tournament results for the different events can be found here. A very special congratulations to Echo Feng for being awarded the Under 8 Girl Oceania Youth Champion!

I would like to express my thanks to all our wonderful parent volunteers who assisted with the Doeberl Cup and the Oceania Youth Championships, particularly the Horikawa family! The events would not have been possible without all your wonderful support. I'd also like to acknowledge Shaun Press all the work he put in to run these two major events and thank him for hosting such great opportunities for our juniors in the ACT.
