The ACT Autumn Junior Allegro is pleased to present the ACT Autumn Junior Allegro to be held on Sunday 28 March 2021. The event has been postponed from the original date listed on our website and I sincerely apologise if this causes any inconveniences. We hope to see you all there.

The event will take place at the Campbell High School Library from 10am-3pm and the event is open to all players born on or after 1 January 2001. A minimum of seven rounds will be played with each player having 15 minutes to complete their moves (maximum game time 30 minutes).  Players can expect to be playing against others of a similar level from the third or fourth round onwards.  With trophies for the top players, and other prizes this will be a fun day for all. All children will receive a participation ribbon.

Please help us to run the best event possible by entering in advance.  Late entries will be accepted on the day if space permits.

ACTJCL Doeberl Cup Warm-Up Weekend

In addition to our calendar events, the ACTJCL will run some development activities throughout 2021 aimed at our stronger junior players.

We are proposing to run a training weekend on 20th and 21st March which is primarily aimed at ACT juniors preparing for the upcoming O2C Doeberl Cup - one of the largest chess tournaments in Australia (see further details at the end of this message). As such, entry is limited to juniors who have entered either the Doeberl Major or Minor, although we will also accept entries from ACT Juniors with Australian Chess Federation Standard Ratings* of 600+.

The Warm-Up Weekend will involve a Quad Training Tournament and a Group Coaching Session with a titled (likely Grandmaster) coach. A Quad Tournament is an event where players of similar ability are organised into groups of four. Players in each quad group play one game against each of the other players in their group. The time control will be 90 minutes plus 30 seconds from move 1 (which is the same time control as the Doeberl Major and Doeberl Minor). As this is a training tournament, it will not be rated. We may also invite some adult players to help strengthen quad groups.

If your child is interested in participating, can you please let me know (kwoo...@outlook.com) ASAP. At this stage, I'm only seeking expressions of interest. Remember, juniors must be intending to play in either the Doeberl Major or Minor, or otherwise have an ACF standard rating of 600+.

*A Standard Rating is gained from tournaments where players receive at least 60 minutes per game.

Thanks,

Kate

Secretary, ACT Junior Chess League

The O2C Doeberl Cup

An ACT Chess Association event

The O2C Doeberl Cup is one of the largest and most prestigious chess tournaments in Australia and it’s held right here in Canberra! This event runs from 1st – 5th April 2021 at Southern Cross Club Woden, and is organised into four divisions:

  • Doeberl Premier (for players with Australian Chess Federation standard ratings of 1800+) - 1st - 5th April
  • Doeberl Major (for players with ACF standard ratings between 1400 to 2000) - 2nd - 5th April
  • Doeberl Minor (for players with ACF standard ratings between unrated to 1600) - 2nd - 5th April
  • Doeberl Under 1200 (for players with ACF standard ratings between unrated to 1200) - 2nd - 3rd April

What's the difference between the Minor and Under 1200 divisions?

The Doeberl Under 1200 division generally has a 'softer' field of players, comparable to our regular ACTJCL standard events. The format is six rounds over two days with a 60 minute plus 10 second time control and it is Australian Chess Federation (ACF) rated. Players will need to record all of their moves.  Cost: $60

The Doeberl Minor attracts a much stronger field compared to the Under 1200 division and is most suited to juniors who regularly play in ACTJCL and/or ACTCA standard events and who take their chess seriously. The format is seven rounds over four days with a 90 minute plus 30 second per move time control (i.e. each game can go for up to four hours). This event is ACF and FIDE (international) rated. Players will need to record all of their moves. Cost: $110 for juniors.

You can see current entry lists for each Doeberl division here.

See here for details on how to register for this event. Entries are limited due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Best regards

Emma
