Upcoming events:

  • U8's Championship this Sun 26th June

  •  July Holiday (Olympiad) Boot Camp Mon 11th -  Thurs 14th July (second week of holidays)-

2016 UNDER 8 Chess Championship -  Calling all of Canberra's tiniest champions - The ACTJCL Under 8 Chess Championship is on Sun 26th of June 2016.

Don't miss out!  This event is suitable for all boys and girls born on or after 1 January 2008 who can confidently move the chess pieces around the board.  If your child hasn't play in a tournament before, this is a good one to start.  Chess Clocks will be used and children who have not used clocks before, or have not participated in competitive chess before, will receive instruction and assistance (particularly in the early rounds).  Between 40 and 60 potential grandmasters have contested in this event in each of the last few years, ranging from the very experienced to (almost) complete novices.  All players compete for all rounds unless byes occur.  Nobody is “eliminated” during the day.  We suggest all parents of “first-timers” stay for at least 1-2 rounds to be sure their child is comfortable & happy with their participation.

Seven rounds will be played with each player having 15 minutes to complete their moves (maximum game time 30mins).

Thank you to all the parents of the players who have sent in early entries.

Don't miss out!  We encourage early entries to Emma Guo at emma...@actjcl.org.au or SMS 0423 284 501 preferably before Friday 24th Jun, including child’s name, date of birth, school, current school year and a contact no. where a parent can be contacted on the day (though parents are most welcome to stay and enjoy the day with your child).

Results from 2016 July Holiday Olympiad Chess Boot Camps 11th - 14th July

Thank you to all the participants for your support and being such a good sport at the recent 2016 July Chess Boot camp.  I'd like to thank all our wonderful coaches for their assistance and coaching during the camp. All participants were fortunate enough to be coached by former/current Australian representatives. Special thanks must go to Campbell High for the use of the venue over the four days.

A big Special thank you to Capital Trophies for Sponsoring all the trophies for the 2016 July School Holiday Olympiad Chess Boot Camp.  Much appreciated.

I'd also like to extend a big thank you and good luck to Abigail and Elliot Lee's family on behalf of the ACTJCL family. The Lee family are returning to the US after three years in Canberra. The siblings have been regular attendees to ACTJCL tournaments and coaching programs. Over the past three years, they have been a part of our development squad and are regular prize winners in the tournaments. Their efforts have been recognised at a national level, with both being selected to be a part of Australia's most elite training squad (JETs) this year. They have both been model participants, and I am sure the kids will really miss their company.

    Congratulations to the prize winners:
