With the ACT COVID lockdown meaning that the ACT Under 14/Under 16 Championships could not be held, the ACT Junior Chess League decided to try running this event in a free
online format on Lichess using FIDE (international) online tournament regulations, which required players to appear on Zoom during their games. Being online, the
event was not officially rated.
Congratulations to
Joshua Liang who is our ACT Under 16 Champion with a perfect score (7/7) and to
Minchen Yang, who is our ACT Under 14 Champion. Congratulations also to all of our winners and placegetters. Once current restrictions have eased, we will retrieve the tournament trophies from their current place of residence and post them to recipients.

Thanks to the thirty-two players who took part in this event.
My particular thanks to Chief Arbiter Shaun Press who brought to the event considerable experience derived
from his involvement with international online tournaments. Thanks also to my daughter Saffron who gave up her weekend to be an arbiter.
This event proved to be one of most challenging I have organised to date. Whilst some coped well with playing under online tournament
conditions and rules, others struggled to meet the required
playing conditions. Although we probably wouldn't organise another ACT junior title tournament in this format, we
will run a few friendly (non-Zoom) weekend events for juniors on the ACT Junior Chess League Lichess group (https://lichess.org/team/act-junior-chess-league).
To join this group, you need to sign up for a free Lichess account and also demonstrate that you are an ACT junior chess player when applying to join the group (you can include a message when applying to join the group), otherwise your request will be declined.
