2023 ACT Junior Winter Rapid tournament - three-way tie for first

Last Sunday 27 August, the ACTJCL hosted 47 participants at the ACT Junior Winter Rapid which took place at Campbell High School. After 7 competitive matches, we had three juniors Larry Cheng, Masaki Horikawa and Olamide Fasakin finish with six points. Ultimately, top seed Larry Cheng was awarded first place on tiebreak. We had a number of standout performances from some of our lower rated juniors and I expect some nice ratings gains in the next ratings quarter (tournament was included in the September ratings release). Notably, Yelisey Eldon-Roberts (Best Unrated player) and Ehan Sharif (Rating Group B winner) both scored an impressive 5/7 and finished amongst some our highest rated players in the event.

I'd like to thank all our wonderful juniors for the competitive and good-natured spirit that they brought to the tournament, and a special thank you to those who helped us pack up at the end of the day. Of course, it goes without saying that this event would not have been possible without the assistance of our wonderful team of helpers and Campbell High School. I hope to see you all at our next events.

Prize Winners (full cross table at the end of this email)
1st: Larry Cheng 6/7 (Lyneham High School)
2nd: Masaki Horikawa 6/7 (Marist College)
3rd: Olamide Fasakin 6/7 (Brindabella Christian College)
Rating Group A (500-999): Jonny Chen 4/7 (North Ainslie Primary School)
Rating Group B (1-499): Ehan Sharif 5/7 (Garran Primary)
Best Unrated: Yelisey Eldon-Roberts 5/7 (Telopea Park School)

    September 2023 ACF Ratings Released

Encourage you all to check out the latest Australian Chess Federation ratings list which covers events between 1 June to 31 August 2023. If you are unable to find your name on the classic (long-time control) and quick (short time control) lists, it means that you need to compete in more ACF rated events. ACF ratings are released in quarters, with the next rating release due on 1 December 2023.

A special shout out to the following players for appearing on the special mention ACF lists (longtime control):
    • Top Under 10 list - Jerry Cheng (ranked 9th in Australia)
    • Top Improvers list - Owen MacMullin (improved 158 rating points this quarter!)

    Kind regards
    Emma

Results: 2023 ACT Women's and Girls Chess Championship

The 2023 ACT Women's and Girls Chess Championship attracted an enthusiastic field of 21 players. Although the majority of the field were junior players, the number of teenage players taking part was pleasing to see.
Top seed Shriya Karthik won the tournament with 6.5/7, with Mahi Hegde, Sahasra Selva, and Leah Bayin tied for 2nd on 5/7. Shakthi Karthik was the best Under 14 player, Echo Feng Best Under 12 and Aalia Khadeer Best Under 10.
For a number of players this was their first rated event, with some outstanding performances by the debutantes.

The tournament was organised by the ACT Chess Association and the ACT Junior Chess League.
Many thanks to Campbell High School, our wonderful group of players and volunteers, and Shaun Press for running the event.

Full cross table at the end of this email.

    Kind regards
    Emma
