We received a request from a neighboring community outside our service area to provide a weekly bookmobile stop to their residents. Does anyone have a contract or an agreement to provide bookmobile service to an area outside of their service area?

Thanks,

We do sometimes get requests to do stops out of our county. We do not accept them. We are busy enough trying to fit in locations within our county jurisdictions unfortunately.

We occasionally take bookings outside of our county, but it’s rare. For example, when we served a children’s home that temporarily relocated to the next county during renovations, we traveled for visits until they returned. On occasion, we’ll also attend a large festival or sporting event if it offers a strong promotional opportunity. There are always exceptions to the rule, but generally we don’t schedule visits outside of our county.

We are funded by a 10 year dedicated property tax.  We are prohibited from provided services outside of our funding area.

This and what Tameka said is pretty much our response. We are funded only by city taxes, so we do not go outside of the city limits. Also, we have a hard enough time fitting new requests from city locations into our schedule to even consider stops outside of our jurisdiction. That said, we used to regularly go to the juvenile detention center, which has a Georgetown address but is in the ETJ (extra-territorial jurisdiction = outside of the city limits), but we have not done this for many years.

Be well,

We only provide service within our City limits.   We have a full schedule so only requests from within our city limits get put on a waiting list.

Over the years we have had requests from outside our City limits.  In two cases, we considered it. We indicated they would need to pay for the service.  One was from a neighboring library jurisdiction in need of a temporary library, but they were not willing to bear the vehicle and staffing costs.  Another was from a private school in need of a temporary library.  They were willing to pay, but in the end they decided against it.    In both cases we determine the cost of staffing, plus travel time, and portion of our vehicle costs.
