Webinar: Next Steps in Serving Your Patrons Living with Dementia

January 21 at 2 pm ET/ 1 pm CST /12 pm MT / 11 am PT

Many public libraries across the country have begun to offer programming and services to their patrons living with dementia. This presentation will attempt to summarize these various activities based on the results of a nationwide survey conducted by ALA’s Library Services for Dementia/Alzheimer’s (LSDA) Interest Group in 2024. After presenting an analysis of this data, the presenter will suggest some possible new actionable and scalable activities that libraries may want to add to their repertoire. It may surprise many librarians that 81% of people diagnosed with dementia live at home, not in a residential community. Most public libraries have mission statements that make a commitment to serving all members of their community, including their patrons living with dementia as well as their unpaid care partners. The presenter would like to suggest that a large-scale effort be started by a city, library system or state to initiate a home-based reading intervention, loosely based on the results of the HOMESIDE study conducted in Europe from 2019-2022. As trusted custodians of the written word, in both print and digital formats, are librarians ready to take on a larger role in serving this deserving, yet underserved, segment of our communities by supporting reading as a non-pharmacological intervention for dementia?

See you there!
