We just received our new bookmobile and are looking to sell the one it is replacing. Have any of you done this? What have your experiences been in selling it outright? Have any of you used a consignment company to sell?

HI all,

Our library is on the quest for a new ILS. I always hear from many of you about Sirsidynx, but what about some other ILS that are out there? Can any of you answer any questions about the following:
Whale Song
TLC
Innovative/Clariate
Insignia
OCLC
Civica
Sirsidynx

I would like to hear about your experience from an Outreach perspective.
Do you need to have a static IP address
Does it work well with closed collections
Do patrons see all collections, whether closed or not
Are there authentication issues

Thanks!

Hi! We use TLC.

We have several closed collections (Home Delivery Large Print, educational kits, video games, board games, etc.). All show up in the catalog, where they can be put on hold.

You do not need to have a static IP address; everything lives on the cloud.

I don’t know how your IT department would set it up, but ours has us log into the system using Global Protect when you are away from the building at an event or on one of our vehicles. It adds one more step to getting set up when we arrive at a stop or an event, but really isn’t that much of a hassle. Well, unless it decides not to work that day…

I’ve never used another system, so I can’t offer comparisons. However, it has worked fairly well for us. We have the system set up so you can designate a patron as a Home Delivery patron, which has different circulation rules. We have the Mobile Library and the BookMARK as home libraries and places to pick up a hold, and we use the first phone number field to designate what their stop is (ML-BethSchmidt). TLC is easy to learn and user-friendly.

We use Atriuum. TLC was too expensive for a small library system.
We have a patron circulation class for Bookmobile and all holds for those patrons show up as a report for me.
Some of our staff hated it when we moved from TLC as this system is a bit clunkier but once we got used to it, it is just fine and they have updated quite a bit.
There is an app but it isn't always reliable about scanning barcodes. It is new so hopefully it gets better. It is good for looking up and editing patrons if the signal is strong enough.
We use McNaughten Lease for our LP new/bestsellers and it is hidden in the OPAC for patrons.

Evergreen!  It's open-source, which makes it significantly cheaper to use than any other OLS, and it's cloud-based, so it's a breeze to use for outreach, you just need a computer and some wifi!  My consortium works with Equinox to use it, but ByWater is another company that does programming for it, as well.

We use Evergreen as well, and are part of GA PINES. I don't know about having a static IP address; you just register the workstation (I use a toughbook, since a lot of my stops are outdoors) and don't clear your cookies, and you're good to go.
I'm not sure what a "closed" collection is, but our cataloger does have the ability to show/hide sets of items by shelving location or branch, or we as branch managers can mark individual items temporarily unavailable, which blocks holds. You can put items into "buckets" and do batches that way if you want, as well.
Any other hiccups I have with it tend to be from having spotty wifi with my hotspot.

We use Sirsidynx Horizon, the BiblioBus also uses it for outreach. We use a hotspot that is attached to the bus. The bus has a closed collection, but patrons can see the collection from the library's catalog. Only bus patrons can put a hold on the items. I sometimes get patrons from other libraries in the system looking for items they saw in the collection. If they come in person, I can check out the item for them. I don’t know if the Ip is static or not. I don’t like Horizon, it runs smoothly in most of our rural stops but the issue I have is usability. I would like it to be more user friendly and easier to switch between commands.
