Hi all,

I am looking for ways to get kids engaged when they're touring the bus. We go to elementary schools and have a rule to not touch the books and I was looking for a way to have that experience more interactive. Any and all ideas welcome.

Hi! We have a “scavenger hunt” on our vehicles for regular stops. Depending on the current theme, we have pictures hidden around the vehicle (but not behind things) for kids to find when they come on. We give out little prizes when they find them all. You may not be able to give out prizes, but you could tweak it and do something like that?

Maybe you can make some bookmarks to hand out. They can be fun ones like animals or popular book characters. Or you could highlight reading lists or books coming to the shelf soon.

We do this in our regular library. It could work well for your bookmobile. Even if the prize is just a sticker or a piece of candy, the kids love it.

Perhaps hand a book for their age group to each child when they enter the mobile library. This will keep their hands busy. Telling them  not to touch the books is like telling them not to to touch the candy bars in the candy shop. Have them sit on the floor while you point out the different shelves that hold their materials and any other info you want them to know about.
Then at the end of your talk have the children volunteer to read the title of the book they are holding, or/and ask them if they think it looks like a good, fun, etc. book. Collect the books as they leave,
or better yet, let them check it out.
Most of all have fun and enjoy the kids. Tell them a corny joke to break the ice.

We did this in a system I worked for as well, or other passive games on the vehicle, scavenger hunts were very popular. we also made little seek and find jars with rice they could shake. We did do little trinket prizes as well. It was a good way to get some kids out to the vehicle for boys and girls clubs, after school programs, etc. Another favorite activity was the foam dart board we hung in the back of the vehicle.

Hi Audrey,

My first idea is to let them touch the books, if there is time. We encourage kids to take books off the shelf and look through them, even if they don't have their library card with them. They get excited about our next visit, or getting a book at the school library or just books/reading in general. Some other ways we engage students is to give a mini "tour" of the materials and ask them questions like their favorite book, who's been to the Bookmobile before, who has a library card, etc.  Explain fiction/nonfiction, show examples. Demonstrate Read-A-Long books. Read a short book. Maybe hand out stickers, coloring sheets of favorite characters, book marks.
