If you’re signed up for our emails, you’ll be the first to know for next time.

Reminder: Annual Meeting and Presentation
Wednesday, November 12th, 2025 @ 75:30pm - 8:30pm

While it’s too late to register for the dinner, you can still join us for a presentation by our first Robert B. Coyle Scholarship recipients, Allison Sumner and Billy Hickey. The talk will take us to the Eagle Hill Institute in Maine for a look at the week-long course on native bees.

The evening will include our traditional Tin Can Auction (guests may bring up to 5 new or lightly used items for the auction), a 50/50 raffle plus other activities. Folks who do not wish to join us for dinner may arrive shortly before 7:00pm for the presentation, auction, and raffles. Doors open at 5:30pm, dinner at 6:00pm and program at 7:00pm.

Proceeds for the meeting will be used to fund the Robert B. Coyle Scholarship program.

Massachusetts Mustelids with Jim Morelly
(Ware River Nature Club)
Saturday, November 22nd, 2025 @ 10:30am

Massachusetts is home to five species of Mustelids: North American river otter, American mink, ermine (short-tailed weasel), long-tailed weasel, and fisher. Jim has used conventional cameras along with trail cameras to put together a presentation that offers a glimpse into their elusive lives.

Location: Rutland Public Library - 280 Main Street, Rutland

Birding & Nature Walk at Harvard Pond, Petersham
(Ware River Nature Club)
Sunday, November 30th, 2025 @ 10am - 1pm

A scenic walk at any time of year, Harvard Pond should host a few species of waterfowl and “winter residents” at this time of year. The short section of roadway through Tom Swamp produced a good crop of winterberry this year, so we’ll be watching for fruit-loving species. We’ll also keep our eyes open for other natural features of interest. The trail around the pond, with a few added short spurs, involves easy walking of about 3 miles. Dress for the weather. Bring snacks / lunch / beverage if you wish, or plan to stop for lunch afterward at The Petersham Country Store.

Birds, Bewick, and Brontës by David Spector
(Northfield Bird Club)
Tuesday, December 2nd, 2025 @ 6-7pm

David will describe some of the birds in the novels Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë and Wuthering Heights by her sister Emily Brontë, introduce the wood engravings of bird illustrator Thomas Bewick, and discuss his influence, and that of the science he cites, on the Brontës. David will make the case that attention to the birds can give new insight into the reading of classics, and even reveal a two-century old conversation between sisters.
