On Friday June 30, 2023 at the Rainbow Push headquarters, faith and community leaders will meet to hold a press conference. The Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr and Rainbow PUSH Coalition will be joined by the Leaders Network, in calling upon community leaders to condemn Thursday’s U S. Supreme Court ruling striking down affirmative action in higher learning.
“This decision will lead to fewer Black and Latino students on our college campuses. Young people will have fewer opportunities to use higher education to seek degrees to improve their lives,” stated David Cherry, president of the Leaders Network. “Decades of progress is destined to be reversed with this devastating decision, " Cherry added.
“With this decision the Supreme Court rejects any responsibility to repair and remedy the nation’s caste system and sordid racial history”, says Rev. Marshall Hatch of New Mount Pilgrim Church and the Leaders Network. “Nevertheless, we will never give up the fight for a more perfect Union”, Hatch added.
Clergy from throughout Chicago land and Cook county will converge on the Rainbow Push headquarters to condemn the high court’s actions.
Rev. Dr. William E. Crowder, Jr. of Park Manor Christian Church states “What happened with the SCOTUS decision, to dismantle Affirmative Action, proves that Elections matter, Judges and Justices matter.”
Crowder also stated “But we have experienced bad decisions from the courts before. Thankfully, it did not deter us then and it will not deter us now. We will rise above the majority on the Supreme Court and find a way out of no way to overcome this injustice.”
Chicago activist pastor, Reverend Ira Acree was livid and stated “It’s criminal for the US Supreme Court to strike down affirmative action and to disregard race, in a country that was built on white supremacy.”
“We must do everything in our power to keep the right wing from setting our country back 50 years,” Acree added
