Yikes! Glad the damage was minor. Don't discount the ability of low voltage to create a fire, even with a fuse; all you need is localized heat and something combustible. You would probably do well to figure out *why* it fried instead of just throwing a fuse at it.
Not sure what your ground plates looks like or where it is physically in relation to your battery, but a couple of ideas:
1. Loose connection in your ground plate during heavy load (or charging current). Which lugs were welded?
2. Positive wire harness abraded against chassis - in the default configuration, it's unfused until you get to the fuse box under the steering wheel. I put a 50A breaker on mine (DC rated). Fusing the negative is equally effective and might be easier to wire.
3. If the DC/DC 'surged' that badly, it's probably toast. Does it power on and make 13.8V?
