Has anyone performed this conversion themselves, replacing a tail
shifter with a side shifter? I know what's required *in principle* but
would be interested in chatting with someone that has actually done
it.

tnx,

Hi Dave,
Yep I did it on my 71, apart from the obvious parts, the
plastic bushing on the rear firewall is a special size I got mine from
Pelican parts part # SLP-FSSC-001, cost me $15.65, the hole must be
different between the years, also the engine mounting bar uses
different brackets and bolts, (once again Pelican parts part#
N-010-472-4-OEM for the bolts (x2) @ $3 each and part #
OEM-91437518100 for the CARRIER BASE PLATE (x2) @ $15.75 each),
otherwise you need the transmission, rear and front shift linkage
bars, a newer shifter assembly, new plastic bushings and dust covers.

Oh and don't forget a newer engine mounting bar with a hole in it:)

Did you have any trouble finding any particular part? My concern is getting 90% into it and missing one little piece. Were there any big difficulties along the way? Any estimate on what the whole thing cost you? Finally, where did you pick up the trans?

best,
