What insurance company is friendly to ev's.

I have not gotten a lot of love from State Farm on this subject, even
though I've had them since I was 16.

I also get a lot of love from State Farm for my original stock 74-914.

Apparently not Allstate! My Allstate agent also tried with Hagerty
and apparently had no luck. So I am only insured for the replacement
of a 1974 combustion engine Porsche 914. Let me know if you have any
better luck with this.

Hi David,

I used Progressive for my 914EV insurance when I had the car.
I asked them about an EV conversion and the agent treated it like
an original 914 with a bunch of extra "custom" parts. I insured it
for $11,000 in extra parts to cover the motor/controller etc... I
think the more important item is liability insurance while driving the
car and less about replacing the parts.

Cheers,
Tim

I think one of the most important things for insurance is making sure that you have an adequate document describing the car, and all the parts & labor that went into it.

In the event of an accident (say, you total the car) someone in the higher-ups of Big Insurance Co. is going to flag a $40k 914 for further investigation.  If you don't have documentation that proves the parts & labor, it's going to be hard to get your money back. :)

BTW, the same thing is true for home owner's insurance, especially the part that covers your personal property.  If you can't document what was in your home (say, when in burned down) then you're unlikely to get the full amount, even if you're technically covered.

I also had no issues with State Farm. Apparently, here in Oregon,
there underwriting was changed re: ev's around the 1st of 2009 and
they did not blink an eye when submitting their policy.

You're absolutely right about documentation. I used a video camera to film my house and put the tape in a bank safety depoist vault.

I'll do the same with the car.

I have Allstate in CA and didn't have any problem insuring my EV914, either.  Regarding filing claims, well, knock on wood, I don't have any experience with that.

i have receipts for 17,000 in parts, the rest was done by a classic car appraiser who found other electric cars and their sale prices.
AAA came to my home, took their own photos and a copy of my appraisal, 10 days later they accepted it at its appraised value. so i think i am ok
