Since the September 11, 2001 attacks, over 4,300 first responders and survivors have died from illnesses caused by exposure to toxic dust and debris at Ground Zero, surpassing the 2,974 people who died on the day of the attacks.
Among these, more than 400 FDNY members have died from World Trade Center-related illnesses, exceeding the 343 firefighters who perished on 9/11 itself.
Similarly, the NYPD has lost 323 officers to 9/11-related diseases, in addition to the 23 who died on the day of the attacks.
Other agencies, including the FBI and Department of Defense, have also reported deaths linked to exposure, with 21 FBI employees affected.
