FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Citizens for the Extension of the James Zadroga Act applauded the letter by Members of Congress, led by Congressman Nick LaLota, (R-NY-1) along with Representatives Andrew Garbarino (R-NY-2), Tom Kean (R-NJ-7), Mike Lawler (R-NY-17), Nick Langworthy (R-NY-23), Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY-11), Chris Smith (R-NJ-4 ), Elise Stefanik (R-NY-21) and Claudia Tenney (R-NY- 24) to Secretary of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr., calling on him to respond to the program staff shortage, delays in appeals, problems with the National Program and petition delays at the World Trade Center Health Program.

Benjamin Chevat, Executive Director of Citizens for the Extension of the James Zadroga Act, stated:

“On behalf of the 9/11 responders and survivors who are in the World Trade Center Health Program, Citizens for the Extension of the James Zadroga Act wants to commend Congressman LaLota for taking the lead and Representatives Garbarino, Kean, Lawler, Langworthy, Malliotakis, Smith, Stefanik and Tenney for joining in calling on Secretary Kennedy to make sure that the health program is fully staffed and is fully able to deliver on its mission to respond to the health needs of the thousands who are still dealing with the impact of the toxins from Ground Zero, now almost 25 years later.”

Secretary Kennedy needs to:

•Remove the hiring freeze he has imposed on the World Trade Center Health Program and allow it to bring the staff to full strength to ensure quality care and allow critically needed research to go forward.

•Stop sending program staff on temporary assignments outside the program.

•Ensure that the program has the staff to handle enrollment appeals that have been waiting more than a year to be heard.

•Lift his communications restrictions between the program and the 9/11 community.

•Ensure that the WTC Health Program finally decides on petitions that have been pending for over three years to add cardiac, autoimmune and cognitive issues to the list of covered conditions.
