House Judiciary Committee to Consider State Secrets and PATRIOT Act Legislation

 

             Wednesday markup will be major milestone for Nadler’s State Secret Protection Act, a bill designed to curb executive abuse of the state secret privilege

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Wednesday, the House Judiciary Committee will mark up a series of seminal civil liberties bills, including H.R. 984, the State Secret Protection Act, and H.R. 3845, the USA PATRIOT Amendments Act of 2009.  Nadler introduced the bipartisan State Secret Protection Act earlier this year, along with Reps. Petri, Conyers, Delahunt and Lofgren, in order to ensure meaningful judicial determination of the state secrets privilege.  His legislation would curb abuse of the privilege while providing protection for valid state secrets. 

 

The USA PATRIOT Amendments Act of 2009, introduced by Reps. Conyers, Nadler and Scott, would amend and extend expiring USA PATRIOT Act and related provisions needed to combat terrorism, while at the same time better protecting Americans’ privacy and civil liberties.

 

The Judiciary markup will take place at 12:30pm on Wednesday, November 4, 2009, in the Rayburn House Office Building, Room 2141, Washington, D.C.
