911 Health Watch Statement on NYC Budget:

Thank You, Speaker Menin and the City Council for Fully

Funding the DOI Investigation

First, 911 Health Watch applauds Speaker Menin, Councilwoman Brewer and the entire City Council for the inclusion of $4 Million to fund the Department of Investigation’s inquiry regarding what the City of New York knew about the hazards of airborne toxic contaminants from the collapse of the World Trade Center while advising the public that the air quality in lower Manhattan was “safe and acceptable.”

The 9/11 Community has waited for 25 years for these answers.

This historic first-time use of the City Council’s powers under the amended Charter to direct DOI investigations is an enormous accomplishment. The Council’s actions help to  bring the promise of finally answering what the City knew and when it knew it.

On behalf of 9/11 responders, recovery workers and survivors, we thank them for their work.

As for Mayor Mamdani’s announcement that the Department of Law will be receiving $34.2 million to create “a public online portal for documents related to post-9/11 air quality and health risks,” 911 Health Watch would be happy to applaud the Mayors’ action as well, but we still have questions concerning the Law Department's intentions after they filed a Motion to Dismiss 9/11 Health Watch’s Article 78 court case just hours after announcing the online portal.

You can read the NYC Court Filing here.

We still remain hopeful that Mayor Mamdani can be the Mayor that will answer the question: what did the City know about the health hazards posed by World Trade Center contaminants and when did it learn that information.
