Personalizing the stories and legacies of September 11

A workshop for educators, in partnership with Tribute WTC Visitor Center.

How can teachers use the personal stories of 9/11 to foster empathy and help students understand the impact of 9/11 on their lives?

Participants will:
  • Explore key topics related to the events of 9/11 and its aftermath.
  • Learn from teachers who have connected 9/11 to different subject areas in the curriculum.
  • Interact with artifacts and first-person history at the Tribute WTC Visitor Center.
  • Examine resources and methods from Facing History and Ourselves for teaching this contemporary history, including issues such as civil liberties, national loyalty, and religious identity in the wake of violence.
  • Experience a guided visit of the 9/11 Memorial and discuss how to contextualize the 9/11 Memorial for your students.
  • Develop a project that will allow students to become the transmitters of this history in their school community and act as agents of change.
Space is limited. Registration does not guarantee a space in this workshop. $50 registration fee includes lunch and materials.
